And if @jamesmartin is about, he'll know this.

I need to put my input shaft into a lathe to do some work on it. The bore of the lathe isn't large enough to get the shaft through from the back, so I need to grip the gear end in the chuck. That would be much easier if I could take off the ring with the dog teeth on for the baulk mech. It looks like a separate piece, but all the pictures I've seen for a 'replacement input shaft' show the ring in place. (I can't see how the gear could have been cut with it on).

Can anyone confirm that it does come off?

Thanks James. Yes, need to visit the friendly local engineering fabricators and poke through their bins for a bit of alu tube/rod. Failing that I have a plan B to make something fit the internal taper, chuck that and use the tailpiece to push it in, then drive the shaft with something bolted to it and the chuck.

I'm turning down the end for a smaller spigot bush - if the ring had come off it still wasn't going to be a doddle. The gear is 88.8mm and the throat on the lathe is a frustrating 88.0, but at least I'd have had something square to grab. Hey ho, I didn't expect it to a breeze, and it hasn't disappointed.

Is your lathe long enough to turn it between centres using a drive dog?

Cat-skinning. You don't know how right you are - its to fit a Jaguar engine.

And yes, between centres not so handy, ideally I'd be shortening it by 0.5mm from the crank end, so I'll be finishing that by hand.
