Hi all

got a problem witht the missus P38

it is getting more and more difficult to select 4th & 3rd

lever if held on left side of gate returns to middle , if held on right side of gate just stays there

now on a R3890 in a disco they have bias springs in the top

anybody know if they have them in the P38 as i know the gearboxes are slightly different

Did a search , but seem to end up on the disco area

Any help welcopme, if not will strip one out on a project motor and then will confirm what i find

I have a nagging feeling I did a
Mates one, but I can't for the life of me remember if it was his p38 or his disco. I am sure they are the same, it's the plate that holds the springs that breaks, about £4

The R380 has three gearshift options. Depending if it is a type A,B,or C box. A and C i have not delt with but a common problem with the type B box is one of the springs breaking that centeralise the gear stick. You say it stays in a particular position without returning to centre. That would seem to indicate a spring has broken. These springs are fitted to a plate on top of the gearstick housing. This plate is retained by four 8mm bolts one fore and aft O/S retaining springs and plate. One fore and aft N/S retaining plate. After new springs are fitted the plate must be slid on slots in plate to centeralise gear lever. No adjustment seems possible on type A and C boxes, so if that is what you have, it will just be a spring broken and/or the nylon bush that has failed that the lever fits into on the selector shaft.

PS to this. Looking at RAVE the Range Rover seems to use the type A gear shift remote.

Had the top of one of mine today>

Looks like two bolts from both sides with a ball bearing on it, but not adjustable from the top

going to put the missus one the ramp over the weekend and see if i can access them from underneath ( providing the sun doesn't shine and we harvest corn instead )

Going to investigate RAVE now

Cheers for all the help so far
