I had a right load of fun removing the head on my wife's Disco 200TDi. The head bolts in particular were absolutely solid, so I ended up buying an air impact wrench this week but I'm not sure if it is working (it's a cheapie by Nu-Tool, but I would have thought even they would have some kind of QC before packing it hence my doubt) .

Connected it all up (with an in line oiler) and powered the compressor up (regulated to 6psi as per the spec's of the impact wrench).

I couldn't find my ptfe tape and there was a significant leak from the hoses but even when there was plenty of pressure from the compressor the wrench did nothing except hiss air from a hole above the trigger when I tried it.

Luckily a week of soaking in gallons of WD40 and some reckless brute force got the headbolts out any way. I think I've broken my torque wrench in the process though - my back and shoulders are painfully mullahed too, but that's my problem..!).

This impact wrench looks like a god-send if it does what it should do, so I'm quite keen to know if a (fairly large) leak from the hose connectors is enough to stop it doing anything at all.

There are no instructions with the wrench (just an exploded diagram of part numbers) so I might not be setting it up right...is it bust?

Cheers!

take it to your local tyre shop/garage etc. and ask them very very nicely to try it out on their air line?

I sugest you get the leak sorted out first then you will have the full benifit of the power from the comperssor. The air tools need the presure to work so if you are loosing presure then they probably wont work very well.

bought a nu tool air ratchet once used it once, went to use it again and had exactly the same problem as yourself. took it back and had it exchanged for a new one, which after 6 months it did exactly the same again. i ended up binning it and buying a cp one for twice the price but its 3 times the quality. nu tool make great cordless drills but ****e airtools. i only ever buy cp air tools now, cos they are the best ;)

be fair mate. nu tools werent designed to get head bolts off a landy!
prob ok for getting the wheels off the kiddys tricycle though.

while on the subject of air tools, what do you recomend in terms or spec and make of inpact wrench's and compressors, I have looked on machine mart and there seems to be so many to choose from, what is the difference.

Obviously budget will play a large part in what I end up getting?

I'm such a d!ck..!

Pressure bit was wrong (meant 6cfpm..and yep, in retrospect I'm not quite sure what I was trying to achieve there!).

Anyway before I packed everything away I had a look at the impact wrench and noticed there was a big grub screw on the side of the casing with the word "oil" engraved above it.

Filled the thing up with air tool oil and it ran fine. There was absolutely none in the machine so I guess you're meant to do that. Presume the oil must, aside from lubricating things, create an airtight seal somewhere...

Thanks for all the pointers though!

Malcolm

Why hello Nigel. Where Have you been I was getting worried, thought you may have caught a nasty desease or something.
I thought you would have advised Mally that when it comes to air tools it's not the size of your tool that matters but what you intend doing with it and the size of your compressor.

funny you should say that. only last week she mentioned that i really needed some jump leads.
