Been offered a mid 90s defender for £2500, looks like a tidy thing with 12 months MOT
Whats the downside with Q plates

sugest you check with ins co. to make sure it wasnt a write off. if it was check theres no prob. insuring ins it before you buy, and get chassis checked for allignment etc.could also mean its been made up from part of other motors so cant be sure on year of it. as far as i know there main reasons for q plate.

Thanks for your quick reply.Rapidly going off the idea now , seems like too many uncertainties and a fair bit of faffing about to find out.
Think i'll carry on looking
Cheers mate

as far as i am know, a Q plate is given to a vehicle of unknown age when submitted for a single vehicle approval, so it could be a 'kit' car (made out of bits of other vehicles) been re-chassis'd with a second hand chassis and lost its original identity, it would also apply to a vehicle that has been registered as scrap and brought back from the grave or an import vehicle under certain conditions

Re-sale of a Q plate could be a royal pain in the arse. If your unsure about it now think about if you want to sell it again later. A lot of potential buyers are put off by Q plates.

Thanks for all your points of view.Talked to the seller today and it sounds like it's been stolen recovered as the chassis has been re stamped when it was sva inspected old number probably ground off.
Can't honestly say that having Q plates would bother me but appreciate many people would give it a wide berth. At least with it being sva inspected it is now 100% legal.(More than can be said for a lot of landys)
Think i'll get an insurance quote then decide.
Cheers again
