just done the pump tweaks on my 95 300 tdi and the difference is brilliant! i have turned the smoke screw on the top by one full turn, turned the diaphram 90 degrees clockwise and turned the star nut clockwise by 120 degrees. i have not noticed any black smoke and was wandering if anyone knows whether this will not destroy my engine as everyone is going on about excessive EGT ! any help would be appreciated.

Hi there Colin, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that Exaust Gas Temps only increase radically if you turn up the turbo pressure.

Altering the fuelling should, if anything, actually reduce the engine temps.

thanks for info it makes me feel a bit better knowing its not going to self destruct!

Hi Colin, just make sure that you have her regularly serviced with good engine oil and you'll have no worries.

Just for your info, a filter set (oil, air and fuel) only cost £6.28+vat from Paddock spares. So changing them often is not a cost burden, is easy to do and your motor will thank you for it.

does using an additive like slik 50 and slik 50 gear box oil have any effect on engine performance or is it just advertising crap will good quality oil suffice

I use slick 50 on all my vehicles i normaly do the oil change add the slick 50 and drive around for a while unfortunatly you don't notice the difference as much as when you add the slick 50 leave it ticking over for 30 mins then take it for a drive. I have never had a problem with it at all basicaly it does what it says.

i have found (from 10 years in the motortrade) that you are better off using an engine flush at each oil change, and running an injector cleaner through the fuel on the tankfull before you change the fuel filter

My opinion is that it is better to use good quality oil and change it regularly, than use additives such a slick 50.

I change the engine oil & filter in my vehicles every 5000 miles.

engine flush mmmmm will try that then oil change and bloody good oil what do you recomend any off the shelf stuff like castrol ,duckhams etc fully synthetic or ordinary ****e

Hi there, I use fully synth 5w-30 from Carrefour as it's B3/B4, which is about as good as it gets for now. 5ltrs 21 euros.

I use 5w-30 as it helps starting when operating in the colder temps to come. Helps with mpg too.

would you give it an engine flush have heard on here that it could bugger the engine up

I'm not sure about the stuff they sell as engine flush nowadays, but in the "old" days we used to buy something called flushing oil - it was a lighter weight engine oil - and used that to wash out the inside of your inside.

Basically it would go like this: empty out all the old oil from the engine and the filter, then refill with flushing oil and set the engine on a high tickover for maybe 5 to 10mins. After that, empty out the flushing oil, fit a new oil filter and refill with your new good oil.

Doing this would reduce the amount of contaminants left in the engine, so increase engine life.

TBH I don't do it now as I change the oil every 5,000mls and I leave it a looooooong time to drain before putting the sump plug back in. Change the oil filter, air filter & fuel filter whilst the sump drains.

Cheers

i would be a bit carefull tbh i have a 300tdi with pump tweeked a tad and was also told to watch egt, some of the guys in DOC are running egt sensors in the manifold. you could not touch the exhaust tailpipe on my disco after a bit of stick. its now running a allisport intercooler with de-cat and k&n and egr removed as i read that helped to lower egt, if im correct its the unburnt fuel that makes it rise (running it rich) someone in the know will correct me im sure.im not that technical lol..i did mine as its auto and was a bit scary pulling out of junctions in std form, goes like stink now.

Au contraire mon brave, it's when engines are running lean that they have a tendancy to run hot, putting just more fuel into engine actually cools the mix of air and fuel.

However, forcing more air/fuel mix (by increasing turbo pressure) into the engine will also increase the EGT.

lol i knew i would be put in my place lol

never touched the turbo side on mine as i heard that running over 1 bar was a bit dodgy...lol

The thing is that we are driving these vehicles which weigh 2100kgs with only 111 - 120bhp and we are worried about performance - it's laughable:D :D :D

I once read a report which analysed the 'engine power output at the wheels' ie after going through this tortuous route of gearbox, transbox and two diffs and the results for a tidy Tdi 300 manual were..................61bhp

I understand that people will want to run them as best as possible but really, we should get real about what performance expectations we have with these beloved Discos.

i know what your saying but try pulling our 21ft caravan and 4 up in the disco in a std auto, it was struggling its tits off, hence the need for MORE POWER SCOTTY lol ive now gone down the road of doing my p38 diesel, a spider system from diesel tuners and a larger intercooler on that.nice bit of kit they do..
