so gather not suppose to hear the pump buzzing away loudly for a minute or so when i turn ignition on then !!!!!!!!!!
could answer my idle problem and fuel consumption problem then if its about knackered

should i hear pump hum as soon as i turn ignition on ?? 2.5 td p38

No the pump is not active until the ignition is turned to the start position. When engine fires and current is detected from alternator start position is disabled, by a polarity reversal pump relay is held in directly from alternator.

Just a bit of banter mate you have to live with that on here. You asked and got the answer.:):):)

Aye 15mpg is a bit grim for a diesel. However, I can't see a duff in tank pump causing that. I had a similar problem a few years ago on a diesel. Providing you kept the tank above a quarter, it started and ran fine. Below this, difficult to start and used to cut out going round bends. Fuel consumption was always Ok though at around 22mpg knocking about.

can cope with that im as bad at times
would be nice to sort the problem tho 15mpg is bad

You can check pump is working and it's output by following the procedure outlined in Rave. It depends what sort of town you live in also. Lots of hills, stop start in traffic and at lights and 15 mpg if your heavy on the throttle is about right. Usually if pump is not working there is a distinct lack of power especially on hills.
