This is my engine progress todate...
Reground crank, Rebore, New Valves and guides and followers, Hotspots,Timing Belt etc, etc, etc.

I took the oil pump drive gear assembly to pieces as I was told the perished 'O' rings will cause low oil pressure.
Well the inner one was missing and the outer disintegrated on removal. I got my new ones from the local bearing supplier. 35mm OD x 3mm and the other 20mm ID x 3mm section.

Will it never end!!!

My 19j is starting to breath a bit heavy lately and am considering my options, one being doing a rebuild. I would be interested in costs and parts availability. How is yours progressing, all running now?

Hi,
I did not have any problem getting parts.
I rebored the cylinders and reground the crank. New valves, guides and tappets, cam belt etc. The parts and machining cost was around £800.
I wanted to keep the vehicle as standard as possible......even though not the most powerful engine and a reputation of the earlier 19j not being particularly robust. My engine had done 240000 miles.......reliable enough for me!
An option was to source a 200tdi but that would have probably needed a rebuild.

I have not started mine yet, just the new exhaust to fit and it should be ready to give it a go.

I have good workshop facilities and had to make some pullers for the crankshaft damper, cam pulley and FIP pulley. It is unlikely that they will come off without. They are very simple but necessary.

They are simple engines but heavy so make sure that your lifting gear is adequate. It might be a good idea to remove the head, sump and pistons first......you can then see if a rebore and crank grind is necessary.
If ok then you would not have to remove the engine.

Thanks for that, good to know. I am definitely torn between retaining its originality and upgrading to a 200/300tdi but in no hurry as its still starting and running fine. I think my crane should be ok lol

More Progress.

Engine is now running......it started very easily once I had replaced the lift pump.

The down side is that the secondhand, "its a good one mate" turbo leaks oil into the compressor side.

I have just ordered a repair kit.

Will it never end?
