Problematic windscreen wipers

Any advice/suggestions. As to where to start looking to resolve why the windscreen wipers periodically don't work on my discovery 200TDi?
 
Check the wiper linkage is secured to the motor gear,located at the top of the bulkhead towards the o/s in the engine compartment.You cannot see the fixing its a ten mil nut,you have to feel your way.
