Battery drain will mean bad wiring earth. Clearly the gearbox lights being on is the issue suspect wire chaffing causing live contact. Are you able to remove the gearbox panel to access the wiring to the gear selector XYZ switch. Have any service records showing when any work been done or replacement parts since you had the RR.

Light will remain lit for a few minutes until the BeCM goes to sleep.

Get out of the car, close the doors, lock the car and peer through the window, it should sleep after a few minutes (can be up to 6 minutes I believe, but more usually 3 minutes.)

Is the little blocking piece in the key barrel closing when you take the key out as that leaves power on, if its sticking spray electrical contact cleaner in there and wiggle the key about and in and out a few times let it dry then then spray a little bit of graphite powder in lock.

Nonsense.

Common problem, just don't use oil or WD40 as that will end up gumming things up.
