ffs, this is the website suggestions bit....

anyways, check yer power steerin fluid level - they make that noise when they're low. also check pas pump belt tension.

My 01 td5 makes that noise, also only on the spot work.

Checked the fluid level etc. all fine.

Been making it for while now, no noticable problems.

Let us know if you find out what the noise is, cause mine will prob be the same.

they all make a lil noise especially when turning the wheel when stationary. nothing to worry abt. was like that when i got my 02 Td5. i also tried a new one when my fellow LROS member just got one off the line.

but yes, do check the fluids and top them up if needed. after topping up if it drips, you know you have a problem.

I get that noise as well, only when doing turns at slow speed.

It says in my workshop manual "power steering grunt"

1, check fluid level and bleed system if noise still there

2, check to see if the correct low pressure hose from steering box to reservoir is fitted ANR 3152 if it is

3, do figure 8 manoeuvres to purge box e.g in a car park followed by 10 mins normal road driving

4 if grunt remains contact technical

i haven't tried it on mine yet but will do soon

is the noise there weneva u turn or is it only if yer at full lock??

The way power steerings work is very clever, and involves a skinny torsion bar just inside the steering box that takes the full twist of the steering column when you turn the wheel. When this skinny torsion bar winds up a bit it makes two parts of a hydraulic valve (that sits round the top end of the torsion bar) move in relation to each other, and this sends high pressure oil to the ram that will help the steering to go the way you want. As long as you keep turning the wheel that torsion bar stays twisted, the valves stay open open a bit, and it "assists" the steering.

It is very sensitive. The oil pressure is extremely high.

On full lock, and when turning the steering when parking, the maximum amount of oil pressure is passing the valve, and it makes quite a noise. You hear this because there is no road noise, and the engine will be running not a lot more than tickover.

Something like that.

Mine makes a intermittent grunt when doing slow turns, i presume that's what we're talking about.

mine grunts at slow speed, and i have to top it up once a week. found that eveytime i hold it tight on full lock oil ****es out of the steering box.- its a landy dont forget!

It shouldn't be doing that tho pal, even if it is a landy. Steering box needs replacing me thinks, or at least a bit of an overhaul. My box doesn't leak at all really.
