I’ve just bought a 2001 Defender and there seems to be a problem with the power steering. When stationary if turn the steering anti clockwise the steering gowns and you can feel vibrations though the steering wheel. If I turn the steering clockwise there’s no noise or vibration, tyres fitted are 265/75R16
Can any on advise on how to resolve this problem?

Is this stationary or moving? moving i would say tyre rub maybe, stationary i would say that sounds normal but dont know about the vibrations when stationary. either way if you just bought it, take it back and get hem to look at it for free.

The grown occurs when the vehicle is stationary and when you’re pulling away. I bought the Land Rover privately so I don’t have option of taking it back

i would try looking at the PAS belt for slip. maybe it needs changing or maybe its just loose. try throwing some talcing power on it (to increase friction) this might solve your steering shake or squeel while stationery.

I've had something similar to this when I just bought my 90.
Turning the steering wheel whilst stationary and driving off, it made a very loud noise and vibrated quite a lot. I took it back to my garage and they replaced the pump and it was fine after that:)
Have you checked for leaks and fluid levels? I wouldn't have thought it would be anything to do with the tyre pressure would it?
