Hi a friend of mine has a 2004 td5 that had a leaking power steering box which I have just replaced for him I used just normal power steering fluid in it but he is a bit worried as some one told him that it needs a special type of fluid and that's why the seals went in the first place? So have I put the wrong fluid in? Thanks in advance

The LR product is a variant of pas fluid, so you won't have done any harm putting in std stuff.

Hi, when I found this on Ebay the other night I asked the seller the question "why must we use this fluid and not just normal PAS" and I have just checked my Ebay and have received the message "Other wise it will destroy the pumps". Im not doubting Biggees knowledge and its probably only sales talk but I thought it was worth posting just in case.

Allow me to explain a little further.

PAS fluid is a form of hydraulic fluid to certain specs, commonly referred to as atf or Automatic transmission fluid . All pas systems that I have ever worked on use atf.

On DII's they also have the ACE system which is another hydraulic circuit so in theory you can use (and some peeps do) atf for the ACE system as well. There is an important difference however.

The PAS has all it's fluid-carrying pipework within the warm engine bay.

The ACE system has the bulk of it's fluid-carrying pipework (and valveblock!) outside and underneath the vehicle so in all weathers and TEMPERATURES.

The LR product is supposed to be formulated to cope with these low temps.

As you can see with regard to the PAS system, this low temp element doesn't apply.

So to summarise a Dexron III atf is perfectly acceptable for your powered steering system - imo.

I hope that makes the position clear??
