My landrover has made some horrid noise from the rear axle since I bought it, thought maybe a bearing collapsed so I investigated further. Look like the bearing had collapsed many hundred miles ago and made a right old mess of the stub axle and hub.
I have a spare 200tdi knocking about in the yard (a failed engine rebuild left it as a donor car) so I stripped the axle and thought it would be a easy swap of the stub axle and hub. To my amazement the donor stub axle is about 1" shorter.
Not to worry, I have put it on and fitted ok, brake caliper fits just as normal and the half shaft if the correct length. The problem now is the bolts securing the half shaft are different thread, the donor's bolts are too thick to fit through the original shaft and the donor cars half shaft is too long. (also one is 9splin and other is 24)
Now before I drill through the half shaft's flange to make the bolts fit, what else is going to stop me, is the conversion possible or would it have been easier to swap the complete axle? Are the axles interchangeable?
