Hi Guys, I'm new to your forum and new (ish) to the 2002 freelander TD4 (bmw), I bought it knowing it had a few problems but it never ends.

If any of you lads could offer some advice it would be much appreciated. :)

I know I should have bought a disco or a 110 ect but hey oh.

So the main problem is loads of smoke but the strangest thing is the long rubber pipe that goes from the intercooler to the plastic manifold is inploding, its like the turbo isn't making enough pressure over and above the demand of the engine.

The turbo shaft feels good, and spins freely but what I have found it the vane lever is very tight or seized. I know this won't help but could it be the cause of the pipe inploding and stalling the engine.

So what I have changed,
4 recon injectors,
turbo actuator solonoid
MAP sensor
Synergy 2 + pitbuerg maf
De cat
egr bypass
2 wheel bearings
2 front speed sensors the 3 Amigos still on :(
All filters including turbo breather's

Before it failed today it went fairly well until you came accross a hill and it would lose its boost, guessing again the seized lever causing over boost but again it it was over boosting all the time it wouldnt inplode the intake pipe.

Apart from all that its not a bad motor, I just bought it to drag my trials bike about and work transport.

If I can help anyone with advice or reason why I changed anything please ask.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try changing the hose that keeps collapsing:confused:

Oh btw...go say hello in the introduce yourself section before asking for help

and :welcome2:

Thanks for the advice so far, I poped in the newbie section and said hi :)

The pipe thats inploding is on the high pressure intake so if anything should be inflated, im not to sure what it runs at half a bar ?

:)

the first thing would be to free off the turbo vane control actuator rod, as it is this that controls the turbo boost pressure

Thanks for the input guys, So the inploding pipe, the more revs the worse it gets ! must be demand from the engine !
The actuator rod is now coverd in WD and soom ill free it off but !!!! I removed the 90 elbow that comes from the turbo to the hard piping and all the interior rubber is loose and flapping about.
So just orderd one £31.00 + vat and should be here tomorrow so with fingers crossed.

Has anyone ever used caustic soda in the exhaust side of the turbo to try and decoke it ?

A few pictures of the said problem. :)

i'd be wary of using caustic soda ..
in case it damaged some component

must be a more suitable substance .. or specialised cleaning agent for turbo vanes

cheers for the informative pics btw :)

Thanks for the De sooting advice, I was more thinking about the hard carbon that builds up around the veins and mechanism, my freelander has done 118k, I have had millers in the tank so I was thinking about sorting the exhaust side without removing the turbo.

i guess it depends if yer goin' all-the-way and removing it ..
or trying to clean what u can while it's still in situ ..

the advice given on a page re VW engines ..

" Once the engine is fully warmed up, you should rev the engine high and hard on a regular basis, like when entering highway on ramps (always observe posted speed limits), to raise exhaust gas temperatures (EGT). Raising EGT will burn up and blow out carbon and soot build up out of the VNT vanes and help prevent them from getting stuck. Only do this once the engine is fully warmed up and let the car cool down with a period of normal driving afterwards. The key is both high rpm and high load. High load at low rpm or high rpm in neutral with no load will not raise EGT high enough and long enough to burn up the soot. "

i've a couple of favourite long-run hills hereabouts 'n give the motor a good workout under load every-so-often

there be a youtube'er about some guy cleaning 'is turbo with Mr Muscle
thought i'd give posting that one a miss :)

btw: .. ( and final edit-add to this post :)

at first 'id though about using "Gunk" cleaner and a very hard toothbrush ..
( ensuring that none entered the oil passages )
would take a while though .. .. but don't know how viable an idea it is ..

just now read two forum posts where folk have used carb. cleaner and a toothbrush to clean the turbo vanes
'n i guess what soot didn't remove altogether would be loosened and blown off under engine operation under load
.. and if carb cleaner be ok for a carb and inlet tract .. .. i figure it should be ok for the turbo mechanism ..

that might be viable if you didn't want to remove and dismantle the turbo

Hello fellow landy fanatics. I have a problem which has just occured today on my Freeland 53 plate TD4.
I was driving up the motorway today and I have the following symptoms...

I have a lack of power when accelerating and some black smoke comes out of the exhaust on engine load. When cruising at 60 there isnt a great deal of smoke, its only when opening up the throttle.
The engine & turbo sounds fine and it idles normally. I cant hear any knocking so I am stumped as to what it is.

I suspect there may be a problem with the Turbo, does this sound familiar to anyone?

Regards

sounds like the turbo pipes same thing happened to me luck would have it had some duck tape wound it around a few times to get home over 200 miles before the duck tape started to let go. proved that it was the pipes

Which is the turbo pipe and is it easy to access?
