So after pulling off the road with a knocking noise, towed to first garage, a week later still not sure what it is but has new cambelt kit fitted and suggested needs new engine!! Thanks for your business that will be £670!! Retrieved her on a low loader to garage number 2 good guy, 10mins later sounds like big end bearings, need a new engine!
Just waiting on delivery of a big end fail engine now (doner). As long as block is good planning to rebuild this one and swap out. So heres the question, as this is my first engine rebuild, any tips or observations to look out for? Any sources of good sensibly priced parts??
Took delivery of the engine stand today, engine here tomorrow :)
Cheers

hi mate

what year is urs please

hopefully it's not a snapped crankshaft

where abouts in the u.k. are u

so ref , the first garage , had the cambelt snapped

if so that would explain the new engine

the replacement engine you've got is that one out of a jag or another disco

when the new engine is in, it may need the engines manin ecu reprogramming , for all the injectors etc

if ur local am. ore than happy to pop round if u wish , got an iid diagnostics so can easily plug that in

looks like you've got a big challenge ahead

not sure if the body has to come off to get the engine out,

might be an idea to change the turbo studs for bolts etc

there are other things to do with the engine out, an ideal time

The usual major problem is a main shell spins blocking off oil flow to others , I think I would at least take sump of to diagnose, because a faulty injector can cause knocking, get a diagnostic

Hi again, well due to time restraints and busy life the project is back under way!!! The engine is now out, without body off. Bit of a cow but done. Fully stripped and found crank bearings damaged one missing in action!! Thinking you were correct freelance :) the doner engine was knackered but was good practice lump :) just thinking now I have parts everywhere in my garage are there other parts I should look to change out whilst in bits?? She is a 2008 heads look like new but block not so much! Con rod is damaged from failure but other than than found splinters in one of the oil ways in one of the heads so I'm guessing full strip and clean before anything ?? Many thanks for any hints and help.
I'm in torbay, Devon if that's helps gstuart

hi buddy

sorry to hear it was indeed ur engine, good that at least you've made progress in getting the engine out

as yours is a 2008 have u heard about the oil pump casings, where they do fail from 2007 onwards , if u don't mind me saying decently worth getting that changed, along with the belts front and rear

trying to also think of what other jobs u can do whilst the engine is out

think it's replacing the turbo studs to bolts
checking the cross over pipe

if u pop over to the discovery 3 forum there is a lot of details on what should be done with the engine out

www.disco3.co.uk

any pics plse,

hope all goes well for u

Thank Gary, I had heard about oil pump, but turbo studs are a new one, will look into that one :) so far looking at bearings, Con rod and bearing, full set of seals top and bottom, oil pump, water pump, piston rings, belts, tentioners and a partridge in a pear tree!!! :) any idea on companies that can test injectors? Seems rude not to give them some attention as well :) will try and upload a few photos in a mo.

You could try merlin diesel systems who according to a post by markomate2 about a td5 rebuild reported that they can test and refurbish faulty injectors and recode them, search web , based in Preston lancs.

hi mate

thks for the pics, first impression is it wants me to weep let alone what ur feeling

didn't realise the front comes off, i.e. the side wings etc

but know it is what it is , hope that doesn't sound brutal

aplogises dont know any company but see @ROY SIMPSON has recommended a company

the only engine company i used in the past was turner engineering , understand they sell all the parts and have got a very good reputation ,

yes the turbo studs being changed to bolts is supposed to be easier then to replace whilst in situ and that back cross over pipe

will follow this with interest , apologies if that sounds horrible on the back this engine rebuild

shame ur so far away as i would have certainally helped where i could, even if it mean putting the kettle on

plse keep the thread going as i think i'm going to also learn a lot about this engine

all the best buddy

ps , there are some extremely knowledgeable people as well on the D3 forum who have also done engine rebuilds like urself and also others who work on them every day , so may be able to help whilst ur doing the rebuild, if u put a thread there u will undoubtedly get a lot of help, places to get parts , some may even have some they no longer want

Thought I'd show a picture of the good old days :)
Thanks Garry, will keep posting and hope some of my roller coaster can help you or anyone else in their future land rover ownership :)
Had a quick look at Merlin for injectors, will find out what cost is involved and keep all informed :)
Cheers

Oil pump looks like its the stronger one (best to double check though) which is good as they are now about 200 quid.

The idea of the turbo studs is to make it easier to remove turbo in situ with body on.

it was to remove the studs and fit bolts wasn't it, just wished to make sure it was the right way round, lol

aplogises found it @Richiep , this was the thing about the turbo

Remove the turbo, fit new modified actuator rod. Take out the studs and drill the threads out to 8mm. Use 2x M8 flange bolts to refit. This aids future turbo removal massively, and is also much quicker.

Always good to hear of the next potential job, and how to make it easier when it happens!! Have been looking at island 4x4 prices look good so far???? sorry Lynall but what is the difference between the two? They all seem to look the same? Forgive the ignorance as I said this is my first ever so still learning what the "thingy" is called let alone the difference on modified parts :)
Thanks again guys

this is the new shape oil pump cover, left hand corner is reinforced
