I have a freelander and last year it had its engine replaced under warranty but now the engine has gone again after a year and Land rover are going to charge me over £600 to replace it. Does anyone have any advice?????????

Can't remember all the details but my independant LR specialist told me that this is a common problem with 1.8 Freelanders and that LR are now becoming quite hard work with any warranty work. He claims there is an engine design fault and LR are trying to duck dealing with the financial responsibilities (It was an example while he was having a complain about LR support for non-franchised dealers generally)...

That might not help you tons but if you have good look around the web I'm guessing there'll be detail discussions among other annoyed Freelander owners...

That sounds very unprofessional. If your engine can't last a year then they should definitely replace free of charge. Maybe worth your while to pursue legal avenues if they don't step forward. I'd be very ticked if I were in your shoes and a brand new engine they put in last year crapped out on my 12 months later.

Why did engine 'go'?
If vehicle serviced properly it doesn't even have to be done by main dealer for warranty to still be valid. I had bad experiences with two main dealers as all I wanted in both cases was parts (both under £10 but was willing to pay £50/60 for an hour's inconvenience) and all I got was an offer of emergency recovery at £250-£300 (and then diagnosis and possible repair (no guarantee and AFAICT tyre-fitter diagnoses first to extend chargeable time)) at £50+ph. I'll never use a main dealer again (one problem was a cracked dist.cap - willing to pay £60 plus storeman's time - unacceptable - had to be £250 plus mileage plus diagnosis plus fixing....) 'cos it was the weekend. - Most LRs used at weekends so more likely to break then.... - I work mail order but have (and always will) bend over backwards to help LR owners (not just because it builds loyalty) .
Sell your Freelander, buy a Series and never give LR a penny again. FWIW, LR don't even make any (99%) ofspares -they just get a (unrelated) company to put spare in a LR box and cream off the profits...

HI, as a fellow frelander owner we are currently at stage one of your compliant and I to have posted a plee for help under NEW FREELANDER ENGINE OR NOT NEW FREELANDER ENGINE.Our main dealer was charging us £3000.00 for a new engine, and after much research on the internet on another site someone advised me to as for a post warranty claim form , which Idid an my dealer dealt with it for us LR agreed to pay 100% of costs and 50% of labour still leaving with a bill of £300.Ther are quite a few groups set up on the internet...one of them is an active group with legal backing who aim to make LR payup! It can be found by just typing in Freelander on your search....The surprise will be how many unsatisfied Freelander owners there are out there...The very best of luck.
