please help! i have a 95 300tdi manual that is making a grinding noise from the o/s/f wheel when i set off ! i changed the outer cv about 5 months ago and have noticed this noise. it makes the noise when setting off in a straight line or when on lock, but only when setting off. i have checked the wheel bearing and all seems fine.
any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance

hi, not been offroading for couple of months! problem is is doesnt do it all the time and i dont know how long its been like this coz when ive got me window up and stereo on i cant hear the fooker!noticed noise a couple of days ago when i had me window down and its pretty loud.

Probably quite unlikely but I've experienced something similar in the past and found it to be a siezed caliper binding the inside brake pad on the disc.
Just a thought!

I've had this with a bent disc guard but I'd guess it's more likely to be either very worn pads, stiff caliper, or stiff/broken pad holders. If the pads/calipers can't move then they wear prematurely and if the pads get to metal you feck the discs very quickly.

If its just first thing in the morning and not every time you set off could be light rust on the disc and the noise of the pad removing it. Surprising how quickly a film of rust builds up. Mine does it when its been parked up for a few days especially in the wintery weather.

i think i might of found my problem! jacked it up after work and spotted the ujay on the rear of the front prop has got metal shavings on it and seems to have plenty of play.it looks like its going to give up shortly but can this make the noise i am hearing? and also are they easy to do or should i just replace with another prop?

Yes, it can make the noise, yes it's easy to fix, replacement of prop is only necessary if it's otherwise broken.

This part prop tool makes the job easier.

cheers! on closer inspection it seems like a small part of the joint itself looks like its breaking up so i dont know whether it will repair.does this joint seperate from the prop as it looks like it just slides inside the prop itself?

Good find! One thing is for sure - it has to be repaired and after that you'll soon see if it has cured the noise. If you've never done one before, best drop the shaft and get it done. Mark the shaft relationships before dropping off as the shaft is phased.

just been on ebay and bought a hardy spicer uj so hopefully i will get it fitted and get rid of the noise. thanks to everyone for their help! by the way it cost me £11 with postage, a small price to pay for silence!
