hello again'
wht will cause a play in the propshafts?the diffs?as i have read that ujs will squeak when it is time for replacement, can they cause play?worn splines can they cause play in the front propshaft or only the rear prop?
i am sure that i have worn splines in the rear passenger half axle (LHD) coz they clunck on reverse and full lock, can they also cause a clunck fom N to D,or N to R?
thank you gents

Wear in the splines that engage in planet wheels can cause play. Also main cause of play in diffs is wear in planet wheels and the pins they run on. This combined with spline wear can cause significant back lash.

Suggest you try and localise where the play/slop is. In an ideal world you`d put it up on a fourpost lift.... But guessing you`re fixed like most of the rest of us, (I`m struggling to get my fingers to work after crawling around in a patch of frost free driveway) you`ll have to shake and twist each section of the drivetrain as best you can.
There should be no perceptible play from one end of prop to other, no noises from he props.
There will be some slack from one side of diff to the other, but I wouldn`t like to say how much is acceptable. Anyone comment? At least it shouldn`t be much difference between front and rear.
Could there be play inside the transfer box too? Maybe a stretched Morse chain?
A combination of any/all the above could add up to a fair bit of slack in the system.
