Ok, so my MoT isn't until May next year or something, but I have a cracked number plate on the front of my D90, which obviously is a fail and needs a change...

So to get more birds, less stones, I was thinking, seeing as I want a private plate anyway, as well as have the old type metal plate (like the ones the green fleet military vehicles still use today), I might as well get it all done early-ish next year so I can swim through my MoT (in theory).

I'm just querying the legality of these old type plates? The fuzz don't have any issues with them do they? Or do they?
If anyone does have experience with them, could they recommend somewhere to get them done?

If the car was registered after January 1973 you're supposed to have white with black characters on the front and yellow with black characters on the back, according to The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Having said that, you see quite a few vehicles around which would have been registered later than that with old style black and white or black and silver plates. I wonder what must happen to them when the police stop them or at MOT time? Maybe they've got some 'stunt' plates to put on for the latter.
 
I know the military is an exception, but they have plenty of newly registered vehicles I've driven that are younger than me let alone pre 1973...

The idea of a stunt plate makes sense... hopefully someone who uses them could shed some light on their experience. Thanks for the legal low down though! I didn't know that bit...

It appears not - judging by the lack of 'official' response to my reply to the 'lights/black cars' thread. To be fair, even if the forum has members that are traffic cops they probably prefer to switch off at the end of their shift rather than become embroiled in contentious issues in their free time ;)
 
incorrect plates is a fixed penalty offence now. so I would have thought Plod wouldn't miss a chance to issue a ticket to make up their quota..

Max fine is £1000 if taken to court. Also fixed penalty is for each mistake, so wrong colour plate, incorrect numbers etc It could get expensive especially if they take each letter & number as a separate offence.
 
Yes, I'm surprised more people don't seem to get pulled up for it. Yet you still see folks motoring around in post 1973 machines with black and white plates. It would be a fairly easy case for the police - easier than doing people for not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones, so you'd think they'd do it more often.

Ahh, is this a newish thing or?? Thanks for the help and info, I'd rather less of my money went to Govt than more of it to be honest... it means more for the D90!

You'd think, but maybe just maybe it's not a big deal to them. One of my none landy mates got an easy 3 points for a copper who was a total jobsworth pulling him and threatening to give 12 points for tread! Apparently he was "lucky" to get done for one tyre.. I do too many miles covering too much distance to risk doing it and hope only the local bob wont do me in.
 
My vw camper goes through every mot on pre 73 style plates and its reg 78 I have never had any issues with police either. (Touches wood :p )
A campsite in cornwal used an anpr system to allow people in and out and it never let the camper through so that could be the only issue the plod might have?
 
ANPR systems are being used more and more at the moment. DVLA are out in force looking for untaxed vehicles due to the recent changes in the legislation. A car dealer freind of ours is getting absolutely tortured by them stopping him.
As for the number plates, i know in Northern ireland that the police and to be more specific, Traffic Branch are fairly strict on them. I had a set of less than legal plates on a previous car and by less than legal, i mean the digits were slightly smaller and squarer(Metro digits) I was stopped and given a go and get them changed kind of warning from Traffic Branch. If i recall, it was a £30 fixed penalty notice at the time.The officer was actually OK with me and i didnt mind sorting them out as i,d have had to change them for MOT anyways.

Maybe because it's from the same era the plod don't know different? But the ANPR sounds like it might get in the way... thanks for the advice :)
