Pipe from top of front axle

Hi there just doing my weekly checks in the engine bay. There is a pipe/tube which comes out of the top of the front axle and wends its wayup to the bulkhead and then (in my case) just ends. Not sure if its a breather tube BUT mine has been severed half way up Does anyone know what this tube is actually for and is it important that its severed?

reply, its a breather and should terminate at the top of the engine bay

send it higher to roof line along with others.....

there's another one on the other axle,

should end with a U bend (mine stops in snorkle)
