I have been losing clutch fluid and a garage has now identified it as the pipe running from the Master Cylinder to the Slave Cylinder. In fact, there are 3 pipes and 2 need replacing. Total cost for pipes is £200. Garage informed me they had to get a genuine LandRover part, I made a few calls and it would appear there is no choice but to order a genuine part.
The quote for labour is £250. This seems an awful lot. I watched a video and it seemed quite straight forward. I cannot now find the video.
1. What do people think to the labour cost?
2. Does anyone know if it is possible to buy aftermarket parts?
3. Is it an easy DIY?
4. Can anyone provide a link to a how to video.
Thanks

Cheers guys. Neilly based on your parts diagram it is 8 and 9 I need. James Martin is this still a quick job?

Gearbox hasn't been out. A garage has diagnosed the fault. They are pretty good.

no theres a top cover secured by 3 x 13mm headed bolts, then a small one between rear of head and bulkhead secured by 2 x 8mm headed bolts

This issue continues. Based on James Martins comments, I had another mechanic check out the clutch pipe issue. He stated all pipes were dry with no evidence of leaking. Concerns over slave cylinder. Both Master clutch cylinder and slave cylinder have now been replaced. However, I am still losing fluid. Disco was off road all last week. Just drove it and brake fluid light came on. At same time, clutch not right. Topped up and all fine. However, when I came to lights and clutch depressed, Disco kept moving forward. Ended up applying brakes and stalling. This happened several times - gear difficult to disengage once stalled. Has anyone any idea what the issue maybe, assuming it is not pipes.

If you are losing fluid it must be going somewhere and there must be evidence of it.

Have you checked underneath? has anyone removed the wading plug from the bell housing to see if there is evidence of fluid there.

Why were the slave and MC cylinder changed? was there evidence of leaking from them?

Cheers

There was evidence from the master cylinder - foam on bulkhead was wet. I believe there was also evidence from slave cylinder. Do all Disco's have wading plugs? I thought this was after market.

The wading plug, is a permanent fitting in the Td5, look at the bell housing at the lowest point there a a 3/8 socket drive square holed threaded plug. If you remove it and fluid comes out then it is worth checking your slave cylinder again.

Did you drive it much after they were changed?

Cheers

Also to check for a leak, put blue mechanics roll around suspect areas and operate the pedal while somebody looks at the area in question to see if a leak is visible.

I have decided to take Disco to local independent LR Specialist. They will investigate and think it maybe the pipe as first suggested. However, labour should be an hour, not, £250 as suggested by local garage. Issue as originally posted is that they cannot locate a pipe. They had a disco in a few days before with the same issue. They did manage to acquire a second hand one. Not ideal, as this may eventually go. The garage are trying to think of an alternative in case they cannot find one. My father was with me at the time and he suggested placing a sleeve over it. The mechanic stated pressure would be too high. Does anyone have an effective solution? Or, where I might find a new pipe?

Hi @Kingly

Can you not use a flexible hydraulic pipe? they can be made with all different connections, I am pretty sure if you pop into your local supplier they could whip one up fairly easily if you know the fittings. Or if the garage have the old one ( unlikely tho) they can give it you as an example, take it and give it to the hydraulic pipe supplier.

In Pony Road Oxford, you have both iirc MF Hydraulics and Pirtek.

Alternatively, I know of a guy who breaks D2's just outside Oxford, who may have a "good" second hand one.

Out of interest , who is the indie?
Cheers

Thanks, Neilly. He stated that he had already been to a hydraulics supplier and I think the issue was with the fine threads and it couldn't be done. I don't know about this area. I am quite near pony road. Issue I have is that I need disco road worthy by next weekend. Indie is Mark Smith Landrover. As a matter of interest, who is your breaker? Could be a useful contact.

Thanks

Hi Kingy

Will PM you the details. I would ask Mark if he knows what the threads are ( I understand he has a very good reputation, have never used him myself ). Or even someone like Mr @jamesmartin may know what they are??. I would personally pop down to Pony Road or give them a call and ask the guys at MF if they have the fittings, I would be very surprised if they do not have them or could not make a pipe up. Some of these pipe guys see it as a personal afront if they cannot replace a pipe for a satisfactory spare.....

Cheers

Issue as originally posted is that they cannot locate a pipe.

The part number quoted by JM above is in stock at Craddocks @ £5.20... I presume the part numbers in the allbrit catalogue have been superseeded (?).

Assuming the pipe is metal, then it can be brazed - and a sleeve brazed onto the pipe would be more or less indestructible....

Agreed - our local place is like this.
I used to use a company called Oxford Valve and fitting company - if they couldn't get it, then it really genuinely wasn't made !
Another option is, do you know any model engineers - they might relish the challenge of screw cutting the fittings for you out of something sensible like bronze.... which should last a bit!!

I'm also a bit confused as to where this fluid is going - did you ever get to the bottom of that?

JM , states this is Reservoir to M/C, I believe the OP wants the one that runs between the M/C and the slave from his description.

Cheers
