300tdi disco 1 manual was driving along 20ish mph and all of a sudden a crunch/clunk followed by a noise that made me think i had blown the engine. stopped it and got out to look for signs of damage and sure enough p/s fluid coming from the back of the pump.

took the belt off and started it the crunching and grinding and knocking was gone but the engine did sound odd. would that be due to it not having a belt on. (only started and ran it for about 5 or 6 seconds just to see if the crunching went when the belt was off)

planning on getting a new pump tomorrow just wondered if there was anything else i should be getting the same time.

thanks in advance for any replies :)

id fit the new pump and a belt and go from there ,ps pump is a separate thing shouldnt effect anything else
that was my thoughts/hopes just wanted someone to confirm it.

so once again THANK YOU james :)
will get the new pump and fit it tomorrow im assuming i can just unbolt the old one remove the pipes and fit them to the new one. how does filling the fluid back up go im assuming there's a bleed system somewhere!

There should be a bleed nipple. Jack the front up so wheels are off the floor, crack the bleed nipple slightly and get someone to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times. Top up the reservoir. When the steering feels ok, shut the nipple and turn steering wheel a few more times. Often any air finds its way out overnight.

update time pump fitted and power steering is all good but it sounds ummm wrong i'll go back out start it again in a min and record it for a few seconds then post the video here bit of luck one of you will know the sound and it will be something simple

if you remove the belt does noise go away, ?if it does rotate and feel the other idlers and pulleys
nope thats the odd noise i had with the belt off before i changed the pump. put the new pump on power steering is back and working but still got "that" sound...

edit: turned the alternator, water pump and idle pully by hand all feel good and ps pump is new not 2nd hand and turns well.

ok so cant see no signs of damaged tappids and the shaft itself seems fine going to recheck clearances in a moment. no signs of soot on the manifolds. any clues where i should look next. i'll try get a video of the engine being turned by hand shortly not sure if it will help but im at a loss on this one no idea what has died with the PAS going and dont understand how it could have got to kill anything else.

going from your vid it sounds like its chuffing , a valve not opening fully ,manifold gasket ,head gasket and injector washer are the common causes, valve sten gap often wear through giving a large gap

new update, went back out to check clearances and they all seem good however when i turn the engine (drivers wheel off the ground on a stand gearbox in 5th) there is a squeak type noise. gonna try talk the other half into holding the cam and record it while i turn the engine will report back with a video in the next 10 mins

Edit: engine will be getting turned with valve cover off so you will be able to see them move and hear the sound.
