Hey guys,

Yet another bloody panhard rod question!

My local LR dealer never actually listens to what I say when I order parts, so it is always a bit hit and miss with what I get. I asked for an SLS air compressor filter last time and got an ACE hydraulic filter, just to give you an idea....

This time, I asked for the 'special dry wax coated bolts' that hold the front Panhard rod in (td5 disco series 2) and they were adamant that Microcat specifies two different kinds of bolt for each end of the rod, even though my originals appeared exactly the same. I asked them to go ahead and order them, and one is a normal hex head bolt and the other is a 12 sided 'hex' head. Both have the same thread diameter, and appear the same length though the dealer claims one is 5mm longer than the other. They also can't tell me which way round they go - wondering if anyone with a td5 (preferably a newer one in case this is a new idea of LRs!) could stick their head under the front bonnet, have a look at the panhard rod bolts and tell me which one has the 12 point hex head!

Many thanks,

David

Just had a look at the Microcat. The end that bolts onto the chassis is part ANR4386, Bolt-Flanged Hex M16 x 70

The one that goes onto the axle is part RDI100020, flanged Hex M16 x 75, though when you look at the picture, it looks like it may be 12 sided. I think better go on the length - I suspect your dealer is trsuting the picture which aint clear.

Note that Rave says when refitting, loosely fit while jacked up, lower so suspension takes weight and then complete tightening. Picture should be attached (4 is the 70 bolt, 5 is the 75).

Cheers!

Hi Graham,

Thanks for your reply!

Both bolts appear to be exactly the same length, but one appears to have two extra turns of thread. Does the x 70/x75 refer to the length of thread, the length between the bolt head and the start of thread, or the length of bolt shank without thread?

It's probably an obvious question, but thought I would clarify!

Cheers,

David

Having measured them this evening, I can't find any measurement that comes out as 70mm, both bolt shanks are 75mm. I will go along with the picture you sent I think. RAVE has a number of pictures showing both bolts as 12 point hex, so I thereby conclude nobody knows ;-)

i'd say screw them in with manliness;)......or just " screw them"...:D

Strange - I would have though they would be different lengths, though 5mm isn't a great difference. I presume the thread is the same on both, other than the number of turns? The wonders of owning a Discovery!

Cheers!

Yep, thread's the same, same locknuts specified for both bolts.... I've fitted them that way round, but I have had a look under a couple of other discos I've walked past today and all have two 6-point hex nuts. The car's alright, it's just the bloody dealers and parts catalogues! ;-)
