Paint / Quality / Prep / Colour codes advice req'd

G'Day Folks,

I'm looking for some good pointers for the restoration of the paint on my new toy =>

So I'll be doing that.

BUT

There's a kind o nice blue on the middle seat tubing and then there's the official colour of the chassis and other such things.

Can some one give this newbie a good shove in the right direction?

Oh yeah - sorry - tunnel vision as usual...

Advice needed =>

...for prep on aluminium and steel with the same top coat...

...which paint brands are known to be good? I've seen an English company called HMG on the interweb - any good?

I don't know what sort of finish you want but I use hmg paints sold through paddocks they do some of the original colours. Then I roller the paint on with a foam roller. For the aluminium if it's bare I use aircraft etch primer.

Most places should be able to match paint if you take them a sample.
The chassis is just black however there are good protective products on the market so don't religiously stick to getting an original black if it won't do as good a job of fighting off rust and corrosion.

Post a picture up of the blue if that's the colour you'd like

I was thinking of using Eastwood products for the chassis in a half gloss black. I'll post up a picture of the blue tubing on the seats tomorrow.

Give Dinitrol a look, they do a kit. Search 'Funrover' on youtube, covers all you need to know.

Hi Stretch, I have been badgered into joining Landyzone to answer your paint query... the vehicle is currently in Deep Bronze Green with a Limestone Roof, the blue inside, presumably was a second hand panel? fitted sometime which is in Marine Blue. Have a look on our website www.paintman.co.uk, it may or may not help. We do have an issue shipping to Europe though as the EU in their wisdom tightened up the regulations so legally we can not longer ship direct using a normal shipper such as TNT or other. As an individual you could see us a any shows and carry it home your selves though, or get someone to do it for you.
Your bargain basement machine looks a really good base to start though, its the original little bits and pieces and fittings which are the most important bits nowadays, the rest can be bought easily new. Good luck with it and I hope this post gets on the forum ok... this is my first effort... now I must try to see how to upload a pic associated with me!!! Dave

Thanks for your response Dave.

I go back to England to see family quite frequently so if need be I'll be able to come over and get the good stuff. European transport isn't such a problem for me.

I did intend to get some pictures done by now but got delayed with other stuff - the pictures will be done soon!

Hey Dave,

I've had a good look through your web site and I like what I see.

I have a few questions.

1) I assume the paint you are selling is a single component paint that does not have the 2K health and safety related issues - is this correct?
2) How shiny are the gloss top coats? I've only ever seen pictures of shiny Land Rovers which I assume are repainted / restored versions. In the real world I've never come across a shiny Series Land Rover (but just because "they are all like that" doesn't mean they left the factory like that). I was wondering if the original paint finishes on the Series Land Rovers were about as glossy as pre-WW2 (duller) finishes. Do you happen to know?
3) If I wanted to use a roller (instead of a brush) do you recommend a particular type of roller? For example in Holland the DIY shops sell coarse grained rollers for normal oil based gloss paints and a finer roller for Acrylic paints. (This is all for house paints on wood etc)

I've used HMG - it seems good. Mostly I used Tractol when repainting my SIII which seemed to me to be similar in terms of quality and easy to use. I have more to say choices and how they worked out over here.

H Marcel Guest paints is only about 8 miles down the road from me in Collyhurst Manchester. Smashing company started in the 30s and boy do they know their onions. They actually developed a paint just for me when refurbishing pubs in the North of England. Needed an acid resisting varnish/lacquer for back bar tops used for cutting lemons. Mad I know but they sent out technical chaps to take samples and all sorts and we only needed a few gallons a year.
I cant say if their brush on enamel is any better than others but I doubt very much its worse.

Do you reckon the Mid Grey was used inside as well?

My upholstery (for want of a better expression) is meant to be the Elephant Grey vinyl - could they have used that colour (or another) as standard for that interior combination?

Thank you - I'll check the colour tomorrow - but this collection gives me the impression it is a bit 1980s - series 3 - I guess?

Options. Always a mix n match.
I would have said the inside and outside is always the same colour and the upholstery a sales option.

Yeah could be. The grab handle behind the front seats is also in the same blue grey colour even though the floors and inside of the doors are in the body (green) colour. I guess for 1965 it was a pretty luxurious version (despite the 4 pot diesel engine)
