P38A PAG oil advice

Hi

I am just installing a good secondhand OEM Sanden AC compressor and I just wanted some advice, please.

Do I need to put some PAG oil into it?
Seems 180ml of Nippon Denso ND-oil 8 or PAG 46 is used in the pumps.
I am guessing its not a good idea to run it without the oil in it......
I have been told the guys will do it when re-charging, but it does not always seem the case. The original pump I had on there leaked and drained all the oil out, it never sounded the same again.

If you buy one retail it should come pre filled and you might be asked to drain a certain amount out.
If it's 'off a motor' then assume it's contaminated, flush clean oil through and fill as per RAVE. At least that's what i intend to do as mine has been open to the atmosphere and the oil attracts moisture like brake fluid does.
When i asked a supposedly reputable AC garage they planned to check for leaks and 'see how it goes', no mention of fresh oil!!
This has pushed me down to road of DIY

Thanks. I have had similar from AC re-charge places that just look blank.

Rave says " Refill the compressor with the following amount of new refrigerant oil: V8 up to 99MY 100 cm 3"

But how? just pour into the AC lines? Which one?

If you have a set of A/C manifold gauges then you add the oil through the charge tube, and use the R134 to force it in..

However, as said by kermy the pump should come pre filled ;)

Interesting idea.. but..
If you don't know how much is in the pump already, you don't know how much to put in. Why not add direct to the pump a measured amount before you attach the pipework?
If you add via gauges, could the pump not run dry until it pumps the oil through?

You could do both I suppose.

Never had an issue adding oil via the charge pipe, assuming the system has been evacuated.. ;)
 
The compressor is not new or reconditioned. It's just one taken off of a working car (not sure how long ago).
I presume is drained as nothing leaks from the ports. I cannot see a drain plug like on some.
The car has no refrigerant in it at all.
Sounds like the best option is to divide an equal measure of 50 cm3 in each side then plug it with the pipes and new O rings.
What do you reckon?
