Check the wires to and operation of the fuel shut off valve.

Check the under bonnet fuse box for signs and smell of burning, check the ingnition relay. (yes I know it's a diesel!) Possibly it has lost sync between the BECM and engine ECU, doubt it's the FIP.

You should have the "Glow plug" & "Injector" lights on when you switch the ignition on. No lights...no start because there's no security handshake.
The FIP's are pretty reliable and usually the first thing that people tend to look to Mistakenly) as the problem.

im in boston lincs. I'll recheck these things tomorrow. Just over quarter of tank. Parked on flat surface. Glow plug light ok and goes off also checked voltage at glow plugs and its ok. Does need one glow plug wich has open circuit but thiswould not stop the fuel flow. Where is fuel shut off vqlve located?

if its lost sync between becm and ecu how does this happen and what do i need to do to resync it? also it was running fine, it loterally was switched off when gf got home and wouldnt rewtart next morning!

P38's do the weirdest things. The electronics are long in the tooth and tempremental. Anything out of the ordinary, especially low battery voltage can cause all sort of wonderful things can happen.

does the remote still lock and unlock the car had a p38a the other day have the reciver fail and drop the ecu becm hand shake on a 96 hse first one i have done for years normaly its the bosch injection models

thanks for replies so far. battery was new in Nov. The air 800 amp one. Had to re code keys when it was changed as they dropped out for some unknown reason! Both Keys lock and unlock. So anyone know where fuel shut off valve is located? And anyone know how to re sync the becm and ecu??

Stop valve is on the pump. It should click open when ignition is turned on.

it sounds like you need a resync like i did the other. i called out a local independent with the gubbins to do it. I did think it could be fuel at first as everything was normal and it was turning over like a dream, but it was the darstedly alarm!

So do i need a fault code reader to resync, ive got one of those, or do i need to re input the access code? ive got that too. as i say, car unlocks and locks, ignition key in ok, if it needs a resync would the pump stop pumping fuel?

To re-sync you need a Faultmate, Testbook or Autologic or a sync mate from BBS

Got it re synced and away she goes! Ordered a hot start fix and 6 new glow plugs off ebay to be on the safe side, thanks for the help.

If you ordered cheapo glow plugs they may not work or at least they won't work for long. you need BERU, NGK or Delphi. Don't fit the hot start fix unless you really need it, hot start problems can be caused by many things.

Hi loplop,

Have you tried taking the fuel pipe off that feeds the fuel filter.
You can put the pipe in a container then turn the engine over.
There should be fuel come through.
This is what I did to check.
No fuel to filter - blocked pipe or - fuel pump faulty.

Mike.

You are a bit late with that, it was re-synced and is fine:)

Hi. I have had problems with my P38 not starting especially when there is warm weather. It turns over well but does not fire and was told it is a fuel problem (or lack of fuel getting to the injectors). I was told that as the vehicle gets older the timing chain on the fuel pump stretches and on the P38 this is quite critical. My mechanic who specialises in 4X4s does not have the piece of kit to set it up so it means an expensive trip to a main dealer. However mine has now let me down once too often and it has got to go. Being replaced by a Ford Ranger.
