Hi all, got me a new wheel with extra buttons for the wireless.

I checked the wiring from the wheel to the rotary coupler and they were already present so I copied the colours of the wires and tried to trace them.

They are:

#1 Purple/black trace
#2 White
#3 Red
#4 Green/red trace
#5 Yellow/black trace
#6 Purple/black trace

However, the wires disappear into the loom and whoever cut off the plugs has disappeared the wires.

Two questions, is there somewhere "likely" for the wires to be picked up again easy enough without having to take the dash apart again?

Q2 is would they have changed the wire colours from the plug under the coupler (I know the French do that) or should I be able to find them in the loom if I remove enough tape?

Stupid questions, but I just don't want to have to do any more than is needed....

Thanks all :)

You will have to look at RAVE electrical trouble shooting manual.

I may (absolutely) have mentioned this before, RAVE doesn't work on my laptop.

I downloaded it and ........ nothing!

THAT is why I asked if anyone knew which wire fed what?

My android stereo is able to learn what does what, but since some wang head cut the plugs off, I have no idea what goes where o_O

I have been 4hrs on the net looking for answers, even resurrected old LZ threads looking for answers.

I guess I will find it somewhere.

I just wish CUNTS would stop cutting plugs off when they have naff all idea what they are doing that it will affect stuff later down the line

Bah!! :(

Maybe you should reserve a little of the cash you are spending on the car to get hold of a laptop that can download RAVE. And use it just for that purpose and other diag stuff. Cheap enough on the bay of E. :D:D

Maybe helpful.

He could really do with full RAVE though, he could then lookup connector wiring colours and connector locations.

Indeed, an easy way to cross reference , lol

Ps, been working on some wiring myself, got a second hand engine bay loom so can retrofit the section req into my fuse box to add heated windscreen washer jets , wanted the correct terminals / connectors so will look all original and be fused correctly

Good luck with that Gary looks a bloody nightmare. :D:D

Lol, funny enough it’s not to bad, just printed out the wiring diagram and taking one wire at a time ;)

This is just one part of the engine loom, got to add 4 x wires into the back of the fuse box , but will have the proper terminals that click into it

Yep, I need to get out more, lol

I love the way you keep coming up with these crazy, eccentric ideas and somehow pull them off.
One day a P38 specialist will own yours and not have clue how to fix it :p
Good luck, keep up the good works and keep us posted;)

Mines a D3 so even more fun, lol

Or was that to doo , apologises if it was

I found the correct "wire" (note singlar) for the steering wheel controls.

Turns out it works on varying resistance.... Which is all well & good, but the stereo has 2 wires (Key 1 & Key 2) so tried all manner of everything, but no dice.

The stereo allows for low, mid & high impedance, which I tried.

I even tried earthing Key 2, but still no dice. I know the buttons work as I had a digital meter connected and the readings were different for each button.

Perhaps I need some kind of attenuator or some such to change the resistance from the buttons, I have no idea.

Gave up and extended the wires to the steering wheel area so I can add something later without having to take the whole bleedin centre console/switch pack.

Cars are dicks

I just copied the full folder from my old XP laptop to the Win X

Doo, if you have "key 1 & key 2", I presume this is an Android stereo ??

If yes, then simply connect Key-1 to the P38 steering control feed yellow wire. Key-2 can be grounded. Then in stereo you have to program the buttons in the settings menus (usually Key Study or similar)

Been through it all, nothing appears to work!

I get varying resistance depending on which button I press, but the radio doesn't seem to pick up a signal. You can choose between low, medium & high impedance, but nothing there either. It has been suggested I get an attenuator, but how would that help as I believe the radio should pick up the pulses from the wheel regardless of what changes the signal.

I got fed up and ran the wires up under the wheel so I can try again without the centre console looking like a terrorists back pack...

I wondered if I should simply ground Key 2 at the purple/black trace wire and see if that helps...

Check the stereo ground wires. This link explains how most Chinese stereos interpret resistive remote keys.
https://download.chinavasion.com/download/Key1Key2GND_Steering wheel.pdf

If you can see varying resistance at the end of the wire measured to GND, then the steering part is working.

Key Learning on the stereo teaches the head unit what keys you want to program for what.
