P38 Side & Headlight Fuses

Following on from the previous thread from RJP374 where he had no side lights (which turned out to be a broken wire from the switch). When trying to figure out what could have gone wrong, I noticed in Rave that there doesn't appear to be any fuses for any of the side / head / fog / reversing lights. There seems to be fuses for everything else, just not the lights. (Unless I'm missing the bleedin obvious?). Out of curiosity, anyone know the reason why this is so?

Checking RAVE, there are no fuses for headlights or side lights although there is a fuse that provides a supply to the instrument cluster that appears to affect their operation.

I guess LR rely on the MOSSFETS that drive the lights to provide protection as they are quick to fail if overloaded.

Ultimately, I think the protection is from one of the Maxi fuses via the BECM feed, but the MOSSFET's would go first. No sign of thermal cut outs in the BECM

Hi All! I have a problem on my 98 p38 around the same lines, My low beams do not work now. Yesterday the rightside went out and today the left side low beam went out. The message says "right hand dip beam bulb failure" and the same for the left. I checked the fuses with a tester and they were all good, checked the bulb connector and it has ground but no power. THE BRIGHTS WORK FINE EVEN LOWBEAM ON HIGH.
I have no clue were to go from here any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks, Jim

Have you check that the bulbs are actually OK? No bulb might mean no power as the BECM can detect the presence of the bulb. Don't know which fuses you checked, there are none for the lights. Check the connectors at BECM for corrosion. Check the wiring loom for continuity from the ligh to the BECM.

Thank you for your reply, I checked all the fuses just to see if one was blown, I actually didn't check the bulb because there was no power. I didn't know it could not send power if there was no load on the circuit, thanks. I'll go get a bulb and post my findings:)

Ok so it turns out I'm a little mental. I was checking the high beams for power. I believe it did this to me before. If one low beam burns out it sends more power to the other bulb burning it out as result. Put new bulbs in it works great. But in the process I found that there was a pinhole leak from the intake manifold gasket. Boy did it leave a pool of coolant on the floor for just a little leak! So I guess it was trying to tell me this with the lights going out lol
Sorry for the bad grammar as I just got done with replacing it after I worked a full day
Thanks for your help though!:D

If one bulb fails, it does not send more power to the other bulb thus blowing it. More likely one bulb failed some time ago and you didn't notice it until the other failed.:)
