P38 saggy head/roof lining

Hi all,

Had my p38 for about 6 months and still have not got around to fixing the sagging head lining, but wife is now nagging. I have seen a few p38s of my cars era (97) on ebay where the buyers have listed this as an issue, so I guess some on here have fixed it? Any advice? I guess some spray glue might be in order. What type is best?

new head linning is the only real fix..

Did mine with spray glue a few years ago.was ok for a while but fell off again later .I dont think spray glue likes temperature changes ,ie hot days cold days damp days ,condensation.. .I glued lightweight carpet to the inside if a horse box ,same thing ...ended up reglueing and stapleing ..cant do that on an RR.On the RR I found I had to cut a slot in the lining to get to all the loose stuff .not very satisfactory

there is a section on rangerovers.net about repairing the headlining, the best way is to remove the cloth and all the old glue then using high temp glue(called something like that, it withstands the temp differences in cars) attach new cloth and refit. Got to do mine but the actual headlining not the cloth is sagging on mine so its a brand new one route for me. Oh if did want to go for a complete replacement and not repair it then i believe they are around £250.

try and find fibre glass replacement,this is an upgrade on the original,and should last for years,will need 2 of you to fit it tho.

Where can i buy the fibre glass upgrade from please. do you happen to know the price?

Beat me to it...was going to ask the same thing. The new headlining route is sounding the the best option.

nationwidetrim.com do one for RR Classic, they don't show one for the p38 but they might be worth a try, maybe if only for them to point you to someone that does, one for the Classic is about £225 I think. Hope that helps.

Ok thanks iv'e Emailed the chap name of trevor, just have to wait and see now

ive tried nationwide before about a headlining for the p38, they do make them but if im right in remembering they only fit it themselves and wont send you one, also i think they are quite a distance from me and dont travel to install them, so i decided not to follow it up, you might have better luck than i have though!

Same problem as tommo, i was going to do it, but its Luton or nr Birmingham they wont pick up or come to you

a genuine headlining is £250 and going by mine its lasted for 12 years until its started to sag. plus you can fit the genuine one yourself if your not near nationwide.

used the same web site for headliner info, did my sunfoof liner, used carpet glue, but be carefull as it solidifies very quick, also use a new clean paint roller to press it on an get rid of any wrinkles that may form.

I had the same problem with my Jag, it seems to be EXACTLY the same stuff, started to come away, then the lot dropped, eased it open & sprayed about 4 cans of adheisive, only for it to totally drop again the next hot day!!
Ended up buying a new roll of genuine roof-lining & high-temp adheisive (in a tin) from Woolies-trim, removed the fibre-glass liner complete ( cow of a job ) cleaning it all up & applying the new liner, you don't realise how large they are until its out of the car, still ok after 2 years!
Now the same has happened to the RR, got to go throught it all again.........Borrocks!

My Sunroof liner has dropped again due high temp through the summer months here, ordered some high temp adheisive and edging tape from a US company (JC Whitney), see how lasts

my head lining needs a bit of attention now its been ok and just very minimal early signs, now its starting to go and needs to be done

any sugestions ?

could i get away with pulling it down a bit and spraying the high temp glue in there on effected areas ? how would that mentiones stuff last that way ?

or someone mentioned flocking rather than a re trim, or spray flocking you can do yourself , or tacking it in a pattern of some sort lol

The problem is the original headlining is foam backed, and it's the foam that breaks down a pulls away, not the glue. The only way to properly fix it is to take it out, peel off the material, brush off the old foam, and re-glue new headlining material back on there.

Cutting a hole and spraying in high temp glue will just let you glue the material to failing foam, and so it will just peel away again in a short time.

Using thumb tacks to pin it up might be a neater short term fix, and if you can live with the thumb tacks in your roof it might do for a while, eventually it'll need replacing though.

ok thanks, it feels like its just the material falling ? its nto drastic at the moment

ive sent an enquiery if i cna pick up a complete board that needs a re trim, to just get done, then just swap them over , may be an easier route than removing, re trimming, etc ? depending on the price of it of course

what sort of thumb tacks are best ? ive read/heard somehere there are ones that you twist in so they sort of screw/lock in and dont fall out so easy ? are there such things as fabric topped ones ? ie that you could get to match the lining to sort of look almost oem ? (that would be cool)
