P38 Rangey EAS Problem

Hi there. I am new to the RR community

recently I purchased a 1996 RR 4.0 P38 but i was told the air suspension had some problems

The car was standing for 9months..

I replaced the OSR airbag to a new one and purchased the diagnostic lead to delete the EAS faults manually, I managed to wipe them however the suspension is still not working.

the bottom light near the down arrow for the ride height stays constantly on

anyone got any tips or advice?

try starting it up, with drivers door open leave it open. give it a chance to put some air in the tank, give it a good 10 mins close the door and press the arrows to high, see if that helps..
 
ok, that tip didnt work :(

im really new to this airbag patter

this was what was coming up on the dash

the top light was flashing constantly and the bottom one stayed on.. also came on the dash with the outline on the dash and the up arrow, so it is trying to move...

any1 know how i get go about getting this bitch to lift?

or know a guy that knows a guy thats knows about range rovers in the northeast of England - preferably Newcastle?
 
Been there, had that and fixed it.

So here's what to do, using the EAS Software.

1. Park the car on a flat surface.
2. Get all of the ride height settings.
3. Make sure thay look sane. (Post here if unsure).
3. Adjust ONLY if needed.
4. Write the profiles back to the EAS (even if you don't adjust them).
5. Use the GOTO buttons to move up the profiles from lowest to highest. (It should move but don't worry if it doesn't.)
6. Unlock the EAS, press stop. Then Exit the application.
7. Disconnect the ODBC Connector, and turn the Ignition off.
8. Start the car and select the Std Profile, and leave for 5+ Minutes.
9. If this fails PM me and I'll give you my Phone Number.

You don't need any of that apart from the unlock EAS, just check that the compressor is running as a first step. It's inside the black box on the nearside under the bonnet. If the compressor is running and the car has had EAS problems it's probably shagged and needs a new seal. If the compressor is not running, check the fuses and relay.

This is the whole point, the OP has already reset the EAS going by the first post. This approach may look bonkers, but I know it works. OK, I'll rephrase that, it worked for me.

Why do programmers always want to over complicate things? From the lights on the dash the thing is trying to go up, if it doesn't go, the most likely cause is no air pressure, if there is no air pressure it is likely to be the compressor. Quid pro quo.:D he can't do the other things if there is no air pressure, he just needs to be sure he UNLOCKED the EAS properly.

If he has unlocked the EAS he should be able to press down key and get flashing light to move to normal setting. If he can't do that EAS is still locked. If he can do that it's lack of air that's his problem.
 
OK, I've just started having a similar problem with my EAS. Not all the time, but if I've parked up where there is a slight slope she drops and when I re start her up she takes what seems and age to rise back up. The best thing I've tried so far is to let her stand ticking over with the Motor Way level selected and after 5 to 10 mins she get's herself back up to that level and after a few mins more I can select the standard ride hight and ups she goes.

I don't have any of the software and cables some of you go on about so I will have to try and sort it out the old way. But I would like to ask if anyone knows what the problem could be?

The compressor seems to be working although there isn't much noise coming from it but it is getting ruddy hot. Could it be that?

It will be the 2nd one I've had to get replaced in 4.5 years if that's the case. Is there a way I could strip it down and "re-vitalize" it or will I have to buy a new one?
 
Suggest Ducky & Beefy both check out `www.rswsolutions` for overview of system. They`d then be better able to ask the right questions & understand any answers/suggestions we may offer!
Suggest O Bife has prob got working pump (assuming heat is coming from compressing of air) so slow rise likely to be leak? How old air bags/ ever replaced? soapy water test for leaks? Software free and cables readily available.(see above site).
S-M-D Suggest read up about system first then
1st. Check pump. If no air in system surely the EAS won`t respond at all? At least seems to me thats a reasonable first step. (Agree with Wammers there). Why did you replace airbag? Guess was shot so maybe others are too? If pump working check for leaks. Start from pump and thro whole system. The pump is not over engineered! It`ll work well when new but if a bit old will struggle to cope with multiple small leaks etc. When checking pump check filter. If clogged will make pumps life even harder.

How old air bags/ ever replaced?
Got the airbags replaced 3 years ago (and the compressor the year and a half before them).

I took the little air filter off the compressor yesterday to see what it was like and while it was off I turned the car on to check if there was any suction. I couldn't feel anything to write home about.

I did say to myself when we put the new bags on that if anything like this was to happen again I would convert her to springs. What are the opinions on this?

What height does a P38 stand at after being converted?

Would the handling be so different?
 
Re-conditioning the air pump is diy-able for £15-00? (air side only not elec motor). Try looking for air leaks with soapy water spray. If you`ve been operating in very dry dusty conditions and not cleaned/replaced air filter enough then maybe pump prematurely failed?
Think most on this forum are fans of the EAS, BUT it is not a fit and forget system. Bits of bent metal attaching axles to body do a good job, but only one job. Either high ground clearance with the cornering ability of a pregnant camel or a ground hugging go-kart that couldn`t bounce over a speed bump. A Rangie should combine the (GOOD) points of both.

I think that just could be the problem, I do live in Portugal and you could say there's a bit of dust around. I did notice a good layer of the stuff over everything when I removed the EAS cover.

LOL That really doesn't bother me too much, I was bought up in 90's and 110's so I'm used to that lovely rolling effect. Anyway, I have just read that some of the spring kits give you a ride level of just a bit higher than that of the normal setting on the EAS and that should be enough for where I take her.
 
Your choice at end of day, but would suggest trying to re-con pump yourself before throwing all the good stuff away! My costing was a bit out tho`. About £20-25 for recon kit plus inlet & exhaust filters. It is fiddly changing the piston seal but much easier than replacing all those other bits & quicker & cheaper. And if you gotta do it every 5 years? Not too bad really.
 
ok guys, just checked the compressor, its pushing air out nicely however when i'm checking the outlet coming from the valve block no air is coming through it, anybody know where to go from here? all airbags are in top condition

So either the solenoid valves are not operating, have you checked the fuses? Or the driver module module has failed, or the solenoid block has an internal problem.
