I can't seem to find much about what goes on (technically) when
I loose traction in my P38.

Can someone please tell me what systems there are in place and
how I can use them effectively! I know that there is some form
of electronic traction control, but I'm not sure how this works
(although it seems to!) Is there a CDL? - albeit one that I
cannot select myself.

Any info would be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Matt.

Traction control on the rear only, as far as I remember (P38, not Vogue).
It's linked to the ABS system, detects if a wheel loses traction and applies
the brake to that wheel, diverting torque to the wheel with the grip. It
works pretty well, though obviously not as well as a full 4-wheel system.

You do nothing. There is no "driver input". Works well.

There is no CDL as such - there is a viscous coupling between front and rear
shafts which automatically locks up if it detects more than a small amount
of difference in rotational speeds. Works brilliantly, and again totally
automatic.

depends on year got better as time went on, ISTR later 1999? have 4
wheel traction control.

Knew a chap who was getting stuck with excessive front wheel spin where
jap crap was having no trouble, so suggested something wrong, after much
hassle and visiting two or three dealers, the problem was finally
diagnosed as "a less than fully efficient rear differential sir" .A new
diff and the machine was a completly different drive!

Let's put the cat among the pigeons .... with a standard non-locking
differential when a wheel spins the torque in the system plummets.
Applying the brake to the spinning wheel (traction control as correctly
described above) enables system torque to be regained which is then
available to the wheel with traction. Arguably I'm being pedantic but
that's not 'diversion'!

It's very much like plugging a leak in a pressurised pipe. Plug the leak
and pressure is regained.

There is a driver choice when the TC kicks in. Do you just let it get
on with it or ease of the go pedal a bit in the hope that the reduced
torque will allow all four wheels to grip properly again.

I would agree. :)

I meant no driver input, as in buttons, levers etc. What you're describing
is good driving.

Depends on model too. My Australian poverty pack '98 4.0 p38 seems to have
no rear traction control at all, certainly I've been in situations where
it's been needed & had rear wheelspin but no telltale on the dash showing
rear diff lockup activity (the manual describes this as happening when rear
spin occurs, but my owners manual also covers the HSE).
Very disappointing, I was embarassed by the Japs as well...
