Help I have a range rover which is a 96 2.5 d. I won't have it much longer according to the wife as it is bloody unreliable according to her in doors. This time ( OK I admit that the goddess and I don't mean wife) has decided not to play due to gearbox issues. Goes into drive, revs but won't move very much. It will change gear but just about moves. Any advice? The wife's looking at and she paid for the goddess on the premise that she works occasionally such as collecting hay and stuff of eBay. Help!

I take it that it's an Auto.

Not teaching to suck eggs....you checked level with engine running, cold, go through gears and back then check?

If I remember correctly drive gear engagment is mechanical so could be a sprag clutch thingy. Does it reverse?

Yes have got reverse and quite a strong 1gear after that it all goes to pot of

So it drives OK in first and reverse??

Hmmm the rest of the engagments are hydraulic controlled so would indicate lack of oil or oil pressure.

Or at the very rare end of the scale a lnackered valve block or ECU but that is rare.

Wammers or JamesMartin are the gearbox guys on the P38.

Are we sure it is gearbox related and not poor engine output caused by the MAP sensor or a duff induction hose restricting power output?

Ok thanks will look at them and let you know

Level check should be done with gearbox oil cold and engine running. Start engine move through all gears several times and place in park or neutral. Remove dipstick and clean. Dip gearbox. Level should be between low and high marks Favouring higher mark. I don't know how you can say filter is clean without removing sump.

Hi removed sump to check recited filled up with new oil still same

Sticking it on a Nanocom may give you some indication. Normally if nothing happens in D but it drives in 1 then you can change up manually it would indicate a sprag clutch problem. Nanocom would tell you if the change servos were working. If there are no fault codes then it will be mechanical and need a good coat of looking at by someone who knows what they are doing.

Ok will try to borrow one or will snap on one read the codes

Ok thank yku

Hi while checking turbo pipes I found that the fuse box was hot I found that one relay was burnt and box smells of burning plastic could this be part of the problem

Good morning tried to plug in with snap on no fault found but on road test found it will not rev passed 3,000 rpm
If it is not going past 3000 RPM it is in limp mode. There has to be fault codes somewhere. Get a Nanocom on it check for faults on ECM and gearbox. There maybe a problem with engine speed not being received by gearbox ECU. Sort fuse box out first then put proper diag on it.
