p38 engine oil

The book says semi synthetic but the specialist who rebuilt my engine warned me to use fully synthetic. So for the last 40,000 miles I've used Halfords fully synthetic diesel formula with oil and filters at 10,000 miles instead (I do high mileage so i change oil maybe three times a year) of the recommended 6,000 but mine will burn an extra 4 litres between changes so I figured I'm not too far off (mind you that's based on the premise that halfrauds are not selling me **** oil).

With money tight at the moment and mileage (but also with 120k on the clock now) much reduced I'm thinking of going back to semi at the next change

autodata say fully synthetic, i run mine on fully and change it every 3000 miles. oils cheaper than an engine.

 Not at 30,000 miles a year!!!

Fully Synthetic is €10/litre over here and at 10 litres per service, it doesn't be long adding up. I know what you're saying is true but if I had time to change at 3,000 mile intervals I would definitely go semi.

RAVE says it has to meet ACEA B3:96 which is a high performance diesel engine oil (although it says A3:96 will do too which is petrol high performance). You'll find that all the semi synthetics will be that standard.

My understanding is that the fully synthetic oils were developed to allow the the likes of VAG take their diesel service intervals out to match the petrol models. Fully syn means that it really does not break down in lubrication qualities over time (as opposed to what happens with mineral oil) and it is contamination is what degrades it hence the extended intervals. Obviously filters etc must be up to scratch too.
Like I said before, If mine wasn't drinking so much between services I'd feel real guilty about stretching the interval but I'm replacing half the oil anyway so I've kinda appeased myself. Hope I'm not wrong:eek:

yep i do the same with the oil,get my filters from the local shop.;)

You can get the oil filters from Vauxhall too as the BMW engine was in the Omega. I could get a part number from my recent invoice if it will help anyone.

I get Trade Club prices, so its very cheap.

Thats just not nescessary, complete waste.

I use Vauxhall semi synth and also get my filter from there and change at 6000 miles without fail.

Costs me £28 for the lot.

you say a complete waste, maybe on yours it is. mine runs sweet as on 165k and as people on here know is far from a standard engine. never had a problem with it in all the 7 years i owned it, so i think i'll stick to the fully on regular oil changes. thanks for the input though,;).

Doesnt matter how you look at it, chaning oil every 3k with fully snyth is just not necessary.

The engine is just a 2.5 turbo diesel, nothing special about it.

I do understand your concerns with regards to the high mileage however.

you aint seen mine have ya old boy , and besides while my young bones are agile enough to slide around under it without aching ill keep on changing the mildy black stuff.:p

no matter what you have done to it ,it is still a BMW lump,i have got the same in my p38,no matter what you add on to it or do to it you are still wasting your time and money changing your oil every 3000 miles.

now forgive me gentlemen, simple logic really. the more you tune an engine the more stress it comes under, i cant see the where the wasteing my money comes in because as you all say its my money to waste. simples;).

what sort of tune is your engine in,yes it is your money but if you could save some does that not make sense.

oh its a nice tune, all down to the exhaust. on a serious note it dont have a problem handing the v8 boys there own arse, lots of the old hard earned been spent on that old bmw lump as you put it. if you want the list i will list them again but it has been put down on other threads plenty of times, i dont see the harm in looking after it.

arrons motor a standard 2.5 bmw

i wish my motor did 130mph

back in the dzay when i had a sport alf i used to do my oil every 3000 n filter every 6000

now i am too lazy or run a more standard motor or drive steadier so dont bother, but have mates that race and they change oil after every meeting and they run synthetic so have to concour work it hard, look after it.

Put semi in mine, got to do the gerabox is that best on recommended or anything else??

not saying you should not look after it,but there is such a thing as overkill,if your engine was in full or semi race or even road tune i would maybe agree with you,yes please tell me what you have done to your engine, send a pm if you want.cheers,gd.

i started of with the basics, straight through exhaust and a cold air space with induction kit then moved on to more expensive gear.
boost controller set to 20psi
port matched inlet
omega rocker with vented breather
bigger nozzles and lower break preassures for the injectors
brand new diesel pump with the fuel quantity control knocked forward a touch
remapped
one off kevlar clutch from kestral transmissions in s****horpe to take it
end result = very quick with a nice trail of black ****e
