ok i know these have issues, but doesn't all 4X4 vehicles?they all seem to require frequent maintenance of some sort or other.
i don't mind doing the work at least i know it is done, what is the main gremlin with the 2.5 bmw diesel p38,i actually enjoy working on it.
can preventative maintenance give me more reliability?

yes as with most things,if you look after it,it will look after you.imho that is.;)

For what its worth, 99 dHSE, bought with 70k on clock. 70.000 miles in 2 1/2years, 30% off road and I don't mean parking up on the kerb. Owed lots of other 4x4's but none that will do it without the same level of maintenance.

Its a matter of expectation.

If you EXPECT your 4x4 to start at the turn of a key after someone else has owned and maintained it for 10 years then you've probably bought the wrong LR.
If you're parked up at the side of some random greenlane in blissful comfort wondering which of the blasted ECU's has decided tp throw a hissy fit this time, then welcome to the LR P38 self help group.
Trouble is, none of us sad b*stards on line at this stage ACTUALLY LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH TO HELP YOU so ignore all drunken posts from Irishmen after midnight :) Hiccup!

My advice is to keep the cooling system in tip top condition. If your planning on keeping it a while, budget for replacing the rad and water pump unless they have been done recently. Overheating is your biggest enemy followed by poor starting, battery drain and flat suspension. Welcome.

From the posts on here, I'm getting the impression they're just as problematic as the petrols. And we don't have the worries of the Fuel Injection Pump.

On a different subject and not wanting to appear to be thick but what does 'IIRC' mean when you see it used in threads? I only know two others - lol for lots of laughter and imho in my humble opinion - is there an idiots dictionary anywhere to forumspeak?:D
