This morning the engine started knocking after driving 20 miles. Stops knocking when I rev it up or drive. Drives fine, still same power. Dont know if related but also my cruise control started acting up on the way to work. Wont let me use the button to accelerate, it just turns off. Then upon arriving to work noticed the knocking sound. I have popped the bonnet and stuck my head in hear and their but cant tell where the knock is coming from top or bottom dont know but it us loud . Not tinny but more of a louder diesel sound over the regular diesel engine sound. Thanks to all those who can advise.

Thanks for the welcome.
I'm starting my p38 journey which I'm told is expensive.
It can be eggspensive. It just means yer won't have so much spare cash to spend on gambling and loose wimmin. Have a read through the range rover section for the popular faults. Then make a plan to fix one per week for the next five years. ;)

I read the welcome and further message and burst out with a laugh for a moment until the dread and realization punched my eyes wide open to a life of service to my RRp38

Update. Water pump, thermo removed, replaced done. Rusty ceased mess but all sorted. Pump had plastic spool and had separated from itself in areas causing a knocking sound. Happy for the moment but crank pulley has un-bonded itself from itself so that's the next job.
Question: can I remove ac belt . It looks to me like I can as it seems to be the only thing connected to that pulley system. Thanks

Crank pulley will definitely cause a noise Ac belt comes of easy use an allen key in the hole in tensioner then just unbolt the crank damper small bolts Do not undo the large center bolt as that drives the oil pump as has to be done up very very tight.

Theres the main ancillaries belt around the pump etc, and a smaller one for AC if you have it.
You can run without the AC belt attached it’s fine.

Start a thread in the RR section, there will be more specialists to help! Crank pulley is an issue needs doing

I need 2 belts for my p38. One for the fan, alt, pump, etc, and one for the ac pump. I am looking for belts and cant find one without ac attached ? It days serpentine belt with ac. My ac belt is separate. So 2 belts and where to get them from or how to look for them properly please.

Hello and thank you all for your advice and consideration and most of all time. I have had my 1999 p38a 2.5d for a couple years now. I have become quite familiar with it now. The list of repairs I've done is too much to list. Really I've only got about 5 grand in and thats including purchase price. I do love my rr but the more I dig into it the more I see from some earlier cowboy bodge. At this very moment I am going out to put it back together. New radiator ( blew up on top) , new ac radiator, drier, heater matrix, and all new heating and cooling hoses. Had to fix some wiring and washer hoses behind offside headlamp. Just replaced water pump and thermo ( again) to find that wasn't the problem. I replaced viscous fan and belt, water pump, thermo, new anti freeze, flushed system, got rid of the air in the system, drove to Leeds for sons hospital appointment. Driving up had no power and viscous fan making lots of noise. Popped the bonnet in hospital car park and checked over engine. The jubilee screw clamps where loose on hose from intercooler to turbo. Clamps had stripped, lots of oily gunk spray covering area. Tightened clamps best I could then drive home. Drove sluggish all the way home, I had to put my foot down to move the thing. About 2 miles from home my car temp shot right up, all the way over and wouldn't drive. Had to basically idle home. Made it to the last corner before the radiator blew it's top off. Sat dead for a week now. Took front end off and checked pump and thermo, all fine still new, no water in oil, or vice versa. I have now replaced expansion cap, expansion valve from rad to tank, all hoses, including inlet hoses and turbo hoses. Air Con rad was rotten and not even capable of being a bracket any longer. Replaced that and the ac drier. Going to put it all back together today. Well...., try. 3 young boys to parent makes a day job into a week slog. Will let you know. Cheers to all who share my dreams. Lol
