overheating on my range rover

HELP!!!!! just changed rad in my 95 4.0 range rover lpg got air out and everthing running smooth sits at half way on temp gauge when idle and can drive for miles but as soon as i turn the heater fully up in car it starts to overheat turn it down goes back to half way

What did the coolant level look like afterwards? Did you have add more to the expansion tank?

Hows the Viscous Fan???

If the temp drops with the additional cooling effect of the Heater Matrix, I would summise that the rad/fan assembly isn't cooling efficently....

Do the news paper test....

Get the engine up to temp, then with a tightly rolled newspaper try and stop the fan, if the fan slows or worse stops, the VC unit is knackered, the papper should get shredded on a good unit....

Also make sure you have bleed all the air out, because the LPG vapouriser is mounted high in the engine bay, it can make getting all the air out difficult....make sure you burp the hoses to try and get all the air out.

coolant level was bang on where it should be neva had to top it up

Curiously he said it overheats when he turns up the heater and goes back to normal when he turns it down

Makes no sense as the heater matrix is always part of the circuit, there is no water valve.

Opps, I read it the other way....as that is usually what happens...the extra cooling from having the heater on reduces the temp....not the other way....

That's what I thought, too. But after advising folks on crank sensors that their cars didn't have and cautioning others not to over tighten the fan belts that were actually serpentine belts, I thought I'd hold my questionable expertise.

Sounds rather strange, only thing springing into mind is a dicky thermostat opening at too high temp, releave little heat by heater matrix and it closes = hot engine

Or is this a nobody knows

Increasing the cabin temp has got to be a red Herring. There is no valve in the P38 heater matrix so coolant always flows through it. Changing the position of the hot / cold blend flap is not going to change much. Mind you since you have already fitted a new Rad it is difficult to see what else could be causing it overheat. Druim's suggestion is worth trying and a new thermostat is not expensive. Just make sure you test it in a pot of hot water before you fit it.
