My Rad Set Up and fans was lose and has over time as the fans been running, worn the top hose of my TD4.

Now, I smelt the coolant and then noticed the heating engine and got over the road ASAP.

Two things.

In ppl's opinion, have I shafted my engine? There's no sign of head gasket failure and when cold it ran on all 4 cylinders.

I rekkon I pulled over within a few minutes.

Two: I'll replace the hose, how does one fill the rad up again? Surely not from the expansion tank?

tis filled from the expansion tank, heater switched to maximum, two bleed screws where the hoses come out of the bulkhead.

quite a lengthy process to ensure no air locks etc.

shouldn't think you've done too much damage. you say you pulled over as soon as you smelt coolant, how hot did the engine get ? if it was in the red could be touch and go. try filling it up and see what happens.

A quick question.When my frost plug popped and it lost its coolant,I'm pretty sure the temp gauge went right down.I put that down to the temp being measured from the temp of the coolant=>no coolant ,no temp measured ?am I wrong ?
 
Well, I dont think my water totally drained, the hole was in the TOP Hose. So I think the reading was false. In sorts. I only just hit the bottom of red before I switched it off in the layby.

I have spliced the hose and J.Clipped it.

Checked Oil and refilled water. Didn't take too much.

Ran it for 45-50 mins.

Temp sits at 50% and no Smoke even on Revs and no bleed of water....

Wait n See.

Our old 2006 TD4 went well into the red on several occasions (at least 6), I had mullered a metal cooling pipe when off road and this had restricted the flow - according to the dealer.

As I don't habitually stare at the display and prefer to look at the road I was unaware of the temperature indication, but was aware that the aircon had turned itself off (reduces load on engine).
First time we were climbing a steep hill fully loaded in northern Spain, the auto box was hanging on to 4th and slipping the torque converter, creating heat. Forced her to change into 3rd in command shift and the temperature dropped, aircon wouldn't come back on until I turned the ignition off :confused:

Topped up coolant at least three times that trip.
Many thousands of miles later no ill effects - well none due to overheating anyway.
