Hi all,

I am new to the forum, and have recently purchased a Defender 90 2.5 d N/A that needs a lot of TLC. Chassis needs rewelding, and major repairs and hell of a lot of work.

I am wondering what a GKN overdrive unit would do for a 2.5 n/a? Would it allow me to at least go above 70 on a motorway journey?

Any feedback on overdrives on a 2.5 d na would be greatly apreciated.

Regards

Rich

Since nobody has replied, I will add my 2 pennies:

I would be very surprised if the overdrive will add speed to your wagon. From what I have read about overdrives (and experienced in friends wagons) there is no speed gain, but a large reduction in engine noise.

The vehicle is normally able to achieve the same speeds as normal, but at lower engine rev's. This also, obviously, will mean that your engine is being saved a bit of wear too.

Note: I do not have an overdrive fitted, so this is simply my opinion.

Increase in mpg is the other big boon with fitting an overdrive; that and having conversations with any passengers you may have!!!

Cheers all for the replies.

It seems that the general verdict is to get one, as for the noise reduction, more mpg, and less wear on the engine.

Will look into getting one then, and let you know when I do.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

There was an article in last months Land Rover World mag. It mentioned the reduction in engine noise, but suggested the extra MPG is a bit of myth, certinately not worth buying an overdrive if your expectation is it will pay for it's self with fuel savings. With that said, the guy in the mag fitted one and is delighted :)

Let us know how you get on. I have been giving a GKN overdrive consideration, but not got around with stumping up the cash.

Hi,

You have your engine type as 2.5 d N/A, a non turbo charged 2.5 ltr diesel. these engines may not have enough torque to enable you to use a GKN overdrive. You may find that when the overdrive was engaged the engine revs would drop below the optimum for maximum torque, and you would slow down.
As an alternative have you looked at getting a set of high ratio transfer box gears. one of the transmision specialists in the magazines should be able to advise you. Also last time I checked a GKN overdrive was about £850 + VAT, new transfer gears would be less than that.
