A bit of wacking with a hammer has revealed some corrosion on both of the bulkhead outriggers (should have been more thorough before buying :( )

Is this level of corrosion repairable or should I get replacement outriggers fitted?

The rest of the chassis has some surface rust but no serious corrosion like on the outriggers.

I tryed repairing one of mine, after a bit more poking with the screwdriver it got bigger.
Your best of replacing them.

Hit it more. If that is all the corrosion there is, i would probably just plate that. Don't get me wrong, new ones would be better and as dr evil says only 20quid a pop. But i'd imagine that's quite a bit or work dismantling and cutting off the old ones to weld the new ones on, and quite tight spaces as well.

Either way though you'll need to repair it before the next mot.

Its not too hard refitting them, I did it on the series

Cut off the old ones line up the back of the new ones with the original marks and tack into place or as its bulkhead (I did the tub ones) just remove the old ones and bolt the new ones up then tack into place and weld

All you need to do then is paint and wax it

I jus done this on my resto project. Major pita! Make sure you have good cutting tools, a good reciprocating saw would make it a shed load easier. Once the old ones are off its jus a case of bolting up and welding on. But I found getting the old ones off a nightmare.

With both mundungus and evil

If that's all the rot there is, I'd plate. If not, replace.

Either way, get loads of ankor wax or waxoyl inside:)

If that was me I'd plate them - I've plated a lot worse.
Like to know where you are all getting your Bulkhead outriggers from though.
When I was looking 2 months ago I could not find cheaper than 33 quid plus delivery from paddocks???

Ive not done these ones. Im hoping mine will last until i can afford a galv chassis. I did the tubular outriggers recently though. Massive pain in the arse.

They're designed to cut off the old ones up to the chassis and grind flat, then slot the new ones inside the old tube and weld around the edge. Cutting off and grinding was easy, but the old tube was bubbled up with rust so that the inner diameter was too small to slot the old ones in. Took bloody ages to file them out to the right size. Two days with my head under a wheel arch :(

I hope these outriggers are easier to change then.

Took it in to a local independant to get a quote - £80 to repair the outriggers (he thought the repair would extend the life of the existing outriggers by a year or two) , £300 plus parts to fit new ones. (he reckoned it would be a days work to take the old ones off and fit the new ones)

The good news is he had a look round the rest of the chassis and agreed that it looks sound :) Just needs surface rust cleaning off and some protection putting on.

Given that, I'm thinking outrigger replacement would be worthwhile - does £300 sound reasonable for the labour?

I had mine replaced at Home - MIBoffroad Ltd which is in leamington so not too far from you. Nice guy and he did a great job as well as supplying the parts, he is MUCH cheaper than you are talking about!!

I got mine from MIB too but gotten them myself. Different design which let's water and mud flow out, plus they are made out of thicker stuff than standard. +1 for that idea

Have a poke at them mine was slightly worse than that. Just 2hrs with a grinder and a borrowed welder no problem. I bet its a nightmare welding new outriggers across the top with bulkhead in place.

Having talked to MIBOffroad, I'm going to be getting both outriggers replaced next week. I decided it's worth getting them done properly before I get some chassis protection on.

In case anyone is trying to get in touch with MIBOffroad, they have just moved so their phones etc are in transition. I got hold of them on this number from their website: 07712653460

The guy at MIB that replaced my outrigger removed the passenger footwell plate to access the top of the chassis to weld the outrigger in place. For what I paid which was around 130 or 160 including supply of the part, removal of old one and fitting I was very happy. I like doing stuff on the landy but welding is a skill I have yet to learn!

It is. There is a bit on the top of the outrigger that extends over the top of the chassis rail, its impossible to weld it with the bulkhead in place, you have to cut the old one off flush and leave that piece on the chassis rail, cut the new outrigger to match up and weld on. Not ideal. Like COA says, you need to remove the floor plate to be able to do the job really, which wasn't a problem for me as there weren't much of it left anyway :)

9" grinder with a new cutting wheel is essential for removing old one.
