Byways open to all traffic or "BOATS" look like this: -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

As I have found on my continuing expedition of Torbay this past week or two some people like to put big cast iron gates at either end of these BOATS and close them off.

How nice. But still plenty of places to play.

The best way to start is sign up to GLASS or CRAG to gain access to Trailwise where you'll find a plethora of lanes in your area to start you off with added helpful descriptions and advice.

Trailwise can be very outdated.

Also what may be shown even on a current OS as a BOAT or similar may well be closed permanently or temporarily by the local council.

Try to find a local group that lanes they should know what is open or failing that check with your local councils rights of way department if a lane is open or not (some are more helpful than others).

The only real way is to check with the Rights of way Officer at the council for the area you looking at, even people who know the local lanes can be caught out , but a good place to start.
