Hello,

I'm looking to buy an orbital sander to prepare my Land rover series 3 body for painting. I'm not doing etch primer, I just want a nice smooth surface and to get ride of flaky paint. Is this a good option;

If not, any suggestions as urgently needed.
Thanks,

You might be better off asking that on DetailingWorld forums. Most series land rovers are lucky to see a paint brush, let alone a rub down first. I suspect the finer points of rotary sanders might be lost here.

Toolstation do a nice air sander for £25, I buy a lot of gear from them as they are good about returns if there are faults.
Hi mate,, we’ve had one at work for a good while now and no probs! Apart from they consume a load of air and get so fekin cold you need to wear welding gloves to use it!!
But apart from that, they do exactly what they say in the tin!!
And wors has been booted , dropped and thrown in anger and it still grafts!!!!

I remember you saying you had or were getting a 50 litre compressor, I have a 50 litre one as well. You will find that it will be banging away almost continually if you are using high consumption tools such as sanders or spray guns. I have an air sander but wouldn't dream of using it with my compressor. Far better to get an electric one. I did spray my Landy with compressed air and put up with the continual running but sanding takes longer and would be pretty intolerable. Get a compressor by all means, air tools are pretty cheap and once you've got them you won't want to be without them but recognize the limitations of a small capacity receiver.

Electric sander better for your ears, I have a small compressor but when I use it all my neighbours stop talking to me . I even made a soundproofing cover for it but still very noisy.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the great advice, my Dad and I have made the decision and are borrowing my friends compressor and trying out the air sander, and buying a blow gun and tyre inflator. So best of both worlds. If I don’t like the air sander, we will buy an electric one!
Thanks for the advice!

Hi Blackburn,

I am borrowing a 100litre air compressor, what make do you have if it’s noisy, and roughly how noisy is it?
