Disco is at the dealers. I know - but there is a bunch of stuff I wanted an opinion on.
They say the smoke on acceleration is not due to the EGR but is because it needs some kind of retrofit to a drain pipe on the turbo, which apparently has an oil catcher tank. Didn't sound too unreasonable but then they said £390 so I said leave it  In retrospect, I think the tank in question does actually relate to the EGR but they just wanted the dosh.
They also say the suspension message I get ("Normal height only available") is due to a faulty compressor - £895 to change. Strange as it always works fine when I switch it off and on. I said I'd live with the message and in the meantime I'll investigate a cheaper solution.
Would appreciate opinions on the above! :)

You can indeed! At least you should be able to! The RR also had EGR issues as well earlier this year which resulted in a judder and black smoke when cold.

The compressor price doesnt actually sound too bad, though try other garages if able.

Compressor doesnt sound to inflated to me!, seriously the compressor is about 500 quid ish so its the labour you want to get down.
Hitachi is the old type compressor, its the AMK version you want for longer life.
Have a google for suspension compressor relay fault.

One of many and their advert small print says they will fit it for 80 quid, so it cant be to hard a job.

2.7 v6 suffers from split std turbo pipework, not saying 3.0 doesnt do it but Ive not read of one yet.
Have read plenty about the modified turbo oil return pipework curing smoke issues when initially gunning it.

Note 2.7 is single turbo and pretty simple pipework, 3.0 twin turbo and quite complicated pipework.

hi

if i may also add, have u got a diagnosis reader yet , will really save u alot in the long run, seeing many dealers want £100 quid every time it's plugged in

highly recommended is an iid by gap diagnostics, bluetooth version are around. £420

also have u checked ur MAP sensor

I thought the compressor price sounded expensive. The compressor itself can be had at a reasonable price ( http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/compres...hitachi-discovery-1013-lr023964g-p-35660.html ) but I don't know how hard it is to fit on a D4 as opposed to my D2.

i fitted the same new compressor on mine , took me an afternoon as i had never done one before, fitted a new bracket at the same time with all new bushes , new relay and software update via my iid reader

found it an easy job to do , assume it's the same between the D3/D4 s

Not sure, D4 is very different to the D3.

i'm not 100 % either , think they still have the same chassis, just a different engine and interior

same as the RR sport being the same chassis as well , would assume the compressor replacement would be the same between the models ???

oh hang on it's a landy rover , lol

hahaha I always thought the D3 was on a ladder chassis based off the D2 chassis and the D4 is a monocoque! Again unsure

this is my guess, lol

i thought the d3 and d4 have the ladder chassis with a monocoque body

d5 doesnt have the ladder chassis just a monocoque shell

ur turn, :p:D

Land Rover developed a body construction method for the Discovery 3, marketed as Integrated Body Frame (IBF). The engine bay and passenger compartment are built as a monocoque, then mated to a basic ladder-frame chassis for the gearbox and suspension. Land Rover claims IBF combines the virtues of monocoque and ladder-frame – though it makes for a heavier vehicle than a monocoque construction, compromising performance and agility somewhat but adding strength, toughness and adaptability.[citation needed]

Ladder chassis, pretty heavy gauge steel with a separate body plopped on the top, certainly more manyl than defender disco chassis that have gone before.

Only thing d2 and d3/4 have in common is the name.

I could be wrong here bit think d3 had the hitachi compressor which is not to durable and for the d4 they went to the amk unit and also made a retrofit kit so the amk could go onto the older d3 motors.
