Evening all, I wish to speak of oil seals, freewheeling hubs and confusion for Tonk. 88" Series 2.

I have leaks on the rear offside hub and offside fwh.

I've looked on various forums and am now confused on two fronts. Looking at Paddock for the rear hub kit it says for part number RTC3534 here: http://www.paddockspares.com/rtc3534-hub-bearing-kit.html

'This is the type with a different inner and outer bearing.'
How can I tell whether I have a different inner and outer bearing? This is obviously important but without stripping it down, how do you know?

And on the FWH, there appears to be a leak, they are AVM, the service packs say 10 or 24 spline, again, how can I tell, and with regard to the fwh, I read varying things about servicing them from just replace the bolts to strip it down and replace gaskets etc, this pack here suggesting the latter: https://tinyurl.com/ybys4lmc

And while the various hubs are in bits, is it like brakes etc, ie should I do both sides at the same time?

Grateful for help/advice as ever.

Thanks,

What size wheel nuts do you have? 9/16 BSF or M16? A series 2 should be 9/16 BSF but those pics look a bit big. If its M16 then the axles or hubs may have been changed for later ones. S2 would be different bearings and 10 spline, but if the axles or hubs are later its anyones guess.

Looks like a series 3 if that is the one in your profile page.
Its possible to fit 24 spline half shaft to early axle but needs later outer drive flange which is round in appearance like yours.[I know because I have done same when I snapped a halfshaft]
The only way to be certain would be to remove the hub and check diameters on stub axle and bearings.

.

You do not need to do both sides, they do not need to be balanced like brakes are. However if you have all the tools out and have just done one doing the second will be fairly quick as you know what you are doing. But if they are not currently leaking it might be just as well to leave alone until they do!

It’s not a huge job to pop a half shaft out to have a look at it. The whole system is designed to do just that

Blackburn: it is the one on my profile, with mutt on bonnet, on an 'F'. And the docs say Ser2 but ....

It's a bit of a Trigger's Broom I think. I bought it (was given, almost), from an old family friend who had it for 20+ years and it never really strayed far from the farm gate, even before he got it. It's had a new chassis in the last 3 years and the rest of it is held together with baling twine, wishful thinking and the massive bumpers front and rear which are steel girders that have been bent into 'shape' by his son, note lack of starting handle opening. Bit of a mixture as I'm finding out. Not that it's a problem, it was always going to be a 'labour of love', (aren't they all),as my daughter has her eye on it for when I'm too 'old and stupid'. (Some say I'm halfway there already...)
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes.
