Got a bad leak on rear axle of the '90 classic Range Rover. Any advice please on what to buy up front to repair it as I have no other means of transport at the moment and need it to get the spares before I start the repair.
Thanks..:)

It looks from the pictures as if it is just leaking from the end of the halfshaft....IIRC it is just a paper gasket under there. However, it maybe wise to also get the oil seal for the back of the hub. Also take the wheel off and have a look at the brake pads, I would be surprised if these have not be contaminated and will need changing as well.

Thanks mate.
nipped over to Landranger today and he is of the same opinion, a gasket.
But he said it may also be a rubber cap that is leaking so I'm going to have a look tomorrow and see if the gasket does it
fingers crossed.:)

could be tha breather blocked as it started after a fast motorway run (90+)

Sorted.
The half shaft bolts were loose

14mm thinks I, so I puts a 14mm on one of the half shaft retaining bolts to try it and it turned by hand.
Undid all the bolts by hand and drew out the half shaft. Changed the paper gasket and did them up a bit tighter :) . Dont think it's leaking now, I'll check it tomorrow after I clean the wheel and hub off. Ran out of parraffin, white spirit and degreaser all at once would you believe, just when you need it eh..:)

Is it a common fault to have these bolts on the rear axle (Rangie) coming loose or was I just unlucky?

On a Series, I make a habit of changing these bolts (or there equivalent) for that very reason.

On a rear coil sprung axle that I refurb'd I had to run a tap into those threads to clean then up. I found that the bolts worked loose and so replaced with new bolts and a dab of thread lock.

So, yes I have heard of these bolts coming loose. I think people are afraid to overtighen them and break one off. There are also removed everytime you wish to adjust or replace a wheel bearing so they see a lot of 'action'. IME the best bet is clean thread, new bolts (often but maybe not every time) and a dab of thread lock to be sure to be sure :)

I think I may have repeated myself there, but does that answer the question :)
