Hi all

Strange one this our drive is on a side slope, if we park our new to us 2000 2ltr diesel Freelander (note it's ours when it's running, mine when it's broke) with the drivers side high, the engine oil light does not go out until you get it on the flat or takes some time to go out. But, with the passenger side high or on the flat goes out imediately. Yes I have checked the oil level at work on the flat. and it's on max. thoughts that cross my mind are

1) Wrong dipstick ie to long therefore not enough oil.
2) Faulty switch.
3) Oil Pump knackered.
4) oil pick up pipe displaced.

To rule these

1) Could some kind soul measure there dipstick?
2) What should the oil pressure be, if I can fit a gauge i can measure it?
3) Is there a non return valve fitted in the pump?
4) Do the pick up's come loose had this on another car?

Any other ideas or suggestions welcome.

Thank Brian

Basic physics would suggest it's pretty normal. My Dad's BMW 3 series has been doing this for awhile, doesn't seem to be a problem.

I have not had this happen with my Freelander TD4 though, but the fuel gauge does tell porkies when it has been parked on a slope and will often tell me I have no fuel even when I have 1/4 of a tank!

My XDi is exactly the same on a slope give it a quick blip of the throttle and it stays out no probs.

I had a look at the pickup when the sump was off earlier this year it was clean and I replaced the 'o' ring seal joining the pickup pipe to the block as these can leak and give poor oil pressure.

Its not something im overly worried about, as the light goes out and stays out. You can fit a pressure gauge by temporarily replacing the oil px switch with a gauage if you want piece of mind.

when was the oil and filter last changed?

Been away so sorry for not replying. Intrestingly it was parked on the flat at the campsite and not once did the light come on when starting, but first night back here and when I start it oil light stays on!

By the way the filter is 5000 mile old as is the oil.
