Hi,

Disco 2, 2002, TD5

before I go wading in to find out where the leak is coming from, I thought I would ask here to see if anyone else has had a leak from somewhere above / near to the alternator?

I think this is where it is coming from, there are lots of little oil splats all over the drivers side of the engine and engine bay.

The oil is also getting caught in the slip stream out the back when driving long distances as the wheel cover on the back door is covered in lots of little oil splats.

Anyone help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

could be a few places egr housing, inlet manifold or seal in back of vac pump, which spreads oil as it hits rotating partsof alt

If the leak is not obvious it can be hard to trace, if no joy based on other ideeas you'll get here better get here the last chance is to get 2 x http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Leak-Detection-UV-Dye-For-Fuel-Oil-Petrol-Diesel-Fluid-Leak-1-x-25ml-Bottle-RLD4/230709189428?_trksid=p2046732.c100040.m2060&_trkparms=aid=111001&algo=REC.SEED&ao=1&asc=20140107095009&meid=1dada35fc1584b94964d7c813bcaa559&pid=100040&rk=3&rkt=4&mehot=pp&sd=260904151516 steam clean the engine put the dye in it then wait for the result

Thanks, that's a good backup plan if I can't find it, i didn't even know that it existed :)

Check that the dip-stick is sealing. I had a similar thing on one of my Tdi 300s and ot was a crack on the dip-stick tube. Maybe it's as simple as my problem....

:(

I hope this is the problem, although I don't remember seeing any oil near or on the dip stick tube

Thanks for these pointers James, I'll be having a good look this sunday, I will check all of these.

Cam shaft oil seal

Is the cam shaft oil seal the big round plastic thing right at the front of the engine?

Thanks for help guys, i'll keep you posted :)

Bit of an update.

It looks / smells like it is hydraulic oil. The only I thing I can think of is it is leaking from the power steering and being blown over certain parts of the engine via the fan maybe.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks
