1997 4.6 HSE oil filter won't budge! My chain tool has now gouged a hole in the filter, so I can't even drive it to a garage. I've put so much pressure on it that the chain filter removal tool handle has bent. Useless thing.
Anybody have a good way to get the filter off? I'm nearly at the stage of bashing a bar through the filter, but fear it'll just tear the can around.

Iv found those chain tools are hopeless, in the old days I used to bash a long screwdriver through a stuck oil filter and then I t was just a matter of spinning the filter off, I suspect that's something to do with the bashing part.
Now I have the three leg filter removing tool which doesn't slip.

Thanks folks. I've got one of those three-leg claw thingies coming, so hope to complete the fluids service next week. Auto box done too, although I *must* remember to fill it up with Dextron!
Now I just have to do the heater O-rings and hunky will be dory, I hope. Oh, and fit the new air springs.

I normally bash a screwdriver though them, if all else fails! Never let me down yet..
If toil is on its way, I would probably wait for that..

My filter wrench is the one with the metal band that tightens up and have never had a problem getting filters off. Filter needs very little torque when tightening.

I think only once in my life did I have a filter that was as stubborn as a stubborn thing,
welded on it was, obviously spun on dry and and done up by a Gorilla on red bull!!

I tried and I tried and I tried some more with my chain remover, my strap remover, a screwdriver hammered through, but no, not a degree of movement.

The answer came with a cold chisel, deftly placed about it's ring piece......the rim........the collar,

tappety tap, tappety tap tap, and several more feckin taps to boot, but off the booger spun.

I bought one of these a few years ago to remove and replace filters on my motorcycle. Due to the way the filter is located and tucked up in the engine no other type of tool will do the job. By good luck it also fits the filters on my wife and daughters cars. I have tried all the usual filter wrenches over the decades, mostly without success and usually ending up using a screwdriver punched through the filter, with all the mess involved. The type in the pic has never failed to work, as it has good full perimeter fit on the "thruppeny bit" end of the filter. And because it has a half inch drive different combinations of wrench and wiggly bits can be used to turn it. They come in a range of sizes to suit any can type filter.

Well, the claw-thingie arrived this morning and I've managed to remove the filter. Took a 2 foot breaker bar to loosen it!
Next question:
I changed the auto box fluid and filter too. When I checked the handbook, it said 4.6 auto box capacity was 11 litres, but when I put 7 in, it filled the gearbox dipstick tube completely! Necessitating diving underneath again to drain off some dextron 3. I've cycled the box through all gears, and checked the level when ticking over, but can't see how 11 litres will fit in. And I've bought 15 litres of the stuff too! Any ideas?
