just fitted oil catcher to my 1989 90(19j) engine took it for a run clouds of blue smoke emitted from exhaust, had to disconnect breather tube from rocker cover leaving it to breath onto the chassis.when I got home checked all the air pipes to and from air filter no oil.any ideas please? At the moment don't have a problem with oily air filter.aljez

I'm wondering if oil can catcher is suitable for 19j I bought it off of e-bay after reading a thread on here where one was fitted with photos attached.I am now running with normal connections but am concerned for future.

Good move. Catch can in the breather lines could well save you from a diesel runaway! :)

Do you have a lot of crankcase pressure? If so, it is likely your head gasket is blowing. That will force a lot of oil vapour down the breather tubes.

It is a fairly easy fix, use a quality Payen or Elring gasket, and fit the catch can properly as a failsafe.

checked pressure from with oil filler off does not seem to be excessive as stated before I changed the hoses over on the oil catcher but same effect thanks for replies

no turboman no chuffing with cap off, weird isn t it don't know what to think only that oil catcher I purchased is not suitable

hi turboman, here hopefully are 2 pics of the setup the tubes are now disconnected but you can see the short one went to the airfilter to turbo and the long one to the rocker cap

no this was done lots of blue smoke from exhaust, changed hoses over same result, now running with normal connections all ok.I have owned the 90 for 23yrs its done 243000 kilometres about 170000miles and is like one of the family all be it worse than a child to look after

I dont really understand why that should be, the catch can should reduce any oil going into the air intake, not increase it. So long as your air filter isn't getting oil on it, that is fine.

And that is an impressive record for a Ninety, mine is good too, although at the opposite end of the mileage spectrum. Only 30k on everything under the bonnet.
And it has been completely trouble free, once the initial sortout on purchase was over, no issues since 2009.

I can!
The intake is sucking the oil fumes out. I reckon that there is little or no resistance to the air flow through the snatch tank. Instead of connecting to the air intake, try allowing the output from the catch tank to open to free air. See if that makes a difference.

I agree, but the intake shouldn't suck any more through the can than through the standard braided hose.

I use a simple solution, I just run a long pipe down through the engine bay, and into a fitting on the chassis, fitted in one of the holes inside the chassis rail aft of the bottom crossmember! :)

Is there a filter in the normal hose? I think there needs to be some form of baffle/restriction in the catch tank. It might be worth stuffing it with loose wire wool to act as a trap.
