My car failed its MOT yesterday on a few things but the worse was burning oil excessively so they refused to do an emissions test.
Personally all I can only see a slight blue tint when I give it a good rev.
It had sat a few months until recently so thought it normal when I bought it.

I am going to do a compression test ASAP but in the mean time I thought I would change the oil breather pipes as it was something on the list anyway.

I took them off to have a look and found one was split for two inches up its length and no oil seperator present. The other was a bit bunged up. (Maybe a third restricted)

I am waiting new pipes arriving to find out but wondered if anyone had an opinion on how this might be affecting performance?

Is the oil seperator meant to be up inside the pipe or does it sit inside the collar of the rocker cover?

It sits in the rocker cover. If you take the hose off you should see it probably covered in gunked up oil, and you should he able to pull it up vertically and out through the collar. Once it is out give it a good clean.

Thanks - mine is missing and the pipe all split. Ordered replacements and was wondering as not too clear in rave.
I am sure would have been obvious when bits arrived.
Do you think the pipe being split would be causing much of an issue?

Its a strange thing! Hoping putting it back together makes it run a bit better.

Certainly is. I think the main job is to catch oil droplets and drip them back onto the rockers as opposed to sucking them into the plenum and then into the engine therefore burning more oil than necessary....

Thats encouraging then. Hopefully repairing it will help my oil burning issue.
Just pulled the plug ... One took an hour on its own to come out due to the lpg stuff in the way. Having fun!

How did this one go?
I was encouraged to double check mine after we last chat here. My MOT failure was for other items now nearly all addressed so emissions were ok. But while I was checking things I found both ofthe breather hoses were splitting, and they were only 18-24 months old.
I think I got the last 2 from DLS, but I found 2 more from Island4x4 and they are far better quality. Also bought a new oil seperator from them as mine was cleaned last time and although not gunked up this time I thought for £2 what the heck.

Sorry about the echo in here. :)

No difference for me unfortunately ... Possibly it runs a bit better but the oil burning still there so not the miracle cure I was hoping for.
I could have sworn i read once poor oil breathers can lead to engines burning oil. Wishful thinking! I have booked a week of at the end of the month to pull the engine and start a rebuild.
