hi,just wanted to check the engine oil amount on my 2000 1.8 freelander.Reason is because ive just changed the oil and filter on it and i had some(prob no more than 1ltr)in an old container so i put that in then used some of my new container which is 4ltr and i have a litre left in this.So i make this roughly 4 litres in total and i thought the engines took 4.5ltr and the oil level is showing to the top of the plastic part on the bottom part of dipstick which is about 7-8mm above the max mark???
Are these engines slow to drain and take a while to read correctly??
any help would be great as dont want to drive untill i know its ok,cheers

Hi Buster,

Engine oil capacity for the 1.8k is 4.5 litres. If you've got most of it in and your dipstick is showing max, just give it a short run and then park up, let it settle and check dipstick again.

How long did you leave it to drain?

I remember when doing mine i had a bit more left over than i thought i'd end up with.

cheers for answer freebiker.
i ran on drive for a while but im wondering if i am reading the dipstick ok.
It has got a plastic piece at the bottom of the tube which has 2 small lines on it with xxxxxx inbetween,is the top line the max or is it the top of plastic part??ive got no manual and gonna get 1 asap, cheers if anyone can help.

The X's are what you read. Max is just on top of the highest X, i can't remember where minimum was but if it you've not got oil on any of the X's you definately need quite a bit of oil lol. Try not to have the level any higher than the top X, else you risk blowing your oil seals if you overfill.

my level is at the top of plastic piece, which is about 6mm above the top line, but its here after what i think is 4 and a bit litres???i dont really want to drain and waste any but cant understand why its reading there??
